it's snowing out here in the northeast and there's thunder rumbling outside.
doesn't thunder and lightning strike only during hot, humid weather?

happens a few times a year here. The lake effect bands off of lake Michigan cause it usually for us.

Thundersnow...epic!!
Yep, that's it, and it's really freaky. I was driving in white out conditions a few years ago, could barely see to stay on the road, and BOOM out of no where there was a flash of lightning and then thunder. It's like you're entering the twilight zone.

Bullshit. It's exceeding rare and even in Canada it's not something you'll see happen more than a handful of times over your entire life. I've lived in the northeast US for 30+ years and we get plenty of snowstorms. I've witnessed thundersnow twice over what is probably 1000 snowstorms.

I first experienced it back in the late 70's.

We get lake effect snow off of lake Huron. That is the cause for it here. I have seen and heard it many times over the years. Sometimes you just see the lightning and never hear the thunder.

It's really dependent on where you are when it occurs.

It used to happen at least once every winter or two when we lived in the Rockies. It's definitely not "normal," but not "OMG! rare" either.
