i just plugged in my digital camera and was able to get the pics without having to do any work! no need to install any drivers or whatnot... very convenient :)

i really think this is windows' strong point... usability, esp. with regards to hardware support.

I agree, not only does my digital camera work without me having to install drivers, but so does my webcam, my printer, and my scanner :D

actually, many cameras support this in all OS now (most notably Olympus). Not that I'm bashing XP, I love my XP too much to give it up. I love finally having an almost driverless solution, esspecially for the things like cameras which you might want to use multiple places.

Not only does WinXP do this, but so does win2k. I bought a Samsung Digital camera and plugged it in before ever installing the software. Well to this day I have yet to install the software and I am still able to transfer my pictures. I havent tested it with winME (since I dont have any machines running winME), but I would guess that it would work the same way in ME.

Did the same thing for my scanner. Hooked it up, said "you have installed your scanner" or something like that. Clicked scanners, clicked scan. Boom. Have my pic scanned. Very handy. Didn't want to have to install all the software for it. It's stuff like that though that's going to come back and kick them in the ass (ex: why would anyone buy company x's scanning product when you can do it for free with windows)

2k did work for some of the devices, but not as many as XP IMO.
