So I should probably forget putting 9.10 on the AMD 785G system I just built?

BTW, it is running great on my old 939 X2 system.

ATI's Linux drivers aren't up to snuff. But, I installed 9.10 last night and put the ATI drivers + Compiz on. Looks lovely, I know Compiz doesn't exactly use super advanced 3D effects. But it looks real nice, and while it's only been a day I haven't noticed any graphic problems. I can't speak on ATI's chipsets in Linux, but the video drivers seem to be much improved from the first time I tried them years ago.

For those wanting to dual boot and if you have two monitors.. just run Linux as your main OS and run VirtualBox, et.al for a Windows VM that you can run fullscreen on your second monitor. I've been doing this setup for years at work because I've been a UNIX engineer forever but I'm still forced to use Outlook and other Windows based software to do my job. I've done every kind of setup and I find this one to be the best.

You don't need dual monitors obviously but it's nicer to look at.

Note, if you're playing games then this advice is probably not for you as I've never tried to run games in a VM. I don't use my computer for that kind of thing.

I wish Ati and Ubuntu would play well together :(

Everyone says this but i have never had a problem with 4000 series or newer cards. I had major issues with my 780G(3200) on my server and had to buy a Nvidia card but both the desktops in my house work fine running Mint 8(based on ubuntu 9.10) and they are running a 4830 and 4890. Even with all the compiz maxed videos play fine. Video playback was a issue in mint 7 when compiz was on but mint 8 has fixed it.

ATI drivers are fine except for tearing. Some people dont notice it though or care

The only time I ever run windows is when I have some funky hardware (ancient programmer, etc) that I can't get going in linux or a windows VM.

You could switch to the open source drivers, I think they're up to reasonable levels of support for the more recent cards.

No tearing, was getting tearing in mint 7 for video playback with compiz enabled but not so far in mint 8.

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my dad's machine and it really wowed me. The installation was simple and easy. Even the printer was instantly recognized and added when I powered it on. It's really come a long way.

I'm still sticking with windows though because I do software development for Windows, and also have hardware that's not compatible with Linux, oh and games.

Indeed!

Ubuntu HAS come a long way! I used to hate Ubu with a passion (LoL! Do a search, if you don't believe me) but I L-O-V-E 9.10!

For the last couple of years, I preferred Linux Mint (an Ubu fork), but 9.10 broke me of that nasty habit... ():)

I played the various Fortress mods in the Linux native cilents for Q3, RTCW and ET for years. It's sad that the Fotress community died off and the closet thing left is TF2 which is way too slow paced.

I now play Quake live as now they have Linux support. Awesome stuff.
