Thumbs up for Sony!

I bought a PS2 on the launch date (October 26th, 2000).

Just this past week, I started getting the dreaded Disc Read Error when trying to play any game on a blue disc. DVDs and silver discs worked fine.

I called Sony's support and they are replacing my 4 1/2 year old unit for free! All I have to do is ship my PS2 to them and they will be sending me a replacement in 7-10 days.

All I can say is  to Sony.

UPDATE: I got my replacement PS2 today. Looks brand new and works perfectly.

Thanks Sony!

thats pretty good.

xbox gives you only a one year warranty. I'm sure they know about the problem and that's why they are giving the exchange to you for free.

Wow! That's beats the hell out of MS, who has basically said tough sh!t to all their Xbox owners with the Thompson drives.

XBOX should replace Thomson drives regardless then. 🙁 I haven't personally had problems, but ya know what I mean.

If you're lucky they'll give you the little one! It's way cool 🙂

I am not sure, but the rep I talked to told me that my problem was covered under a "No Fee Offer" from their Consumer Services department.

Hard to believe that they are going to replace it, considering it is WELL out of warranty.

I know a lot of people bitch about companies and take shots, but I wanted to give Sony credit for taking responsibility for a known problem and taking care of their customers.

The funny part about it is I have already replaced my PS2 with the new PSTwo, so now I am going to have two PS2's. Looks like I am going to have one for sale on the FS/T forum soon. 😀

So they replace your $150 PS2 but shaft me on my $3000 18 month old Sony Wega? Damn.

I guess they need to try and salvage a part of their business that doesn't suck.

It's no joke. And the replacement unit that I am receiving comes with a 90-day warranty as well . 😀

Here is the number I called, in case anyone else out there is having the same problem.

1-800-345-7669

My understanding is that if you are having the Disc Read Errors, they will take care of it at no cost.

They are doing this because there was a class action lawsuit concerning some models of the PS2 and that specific flaw. I worked at EB for some time and you have no idea the volume of PS2s we'd get that couldn't read one type of disc or another.

Defective D-board. Its a ~$1,000 part that goes bad after about a year. The TV won't turn on. There are tons of these TVs with that problem.

That's not my only problem I had with Sony and their CS but the most expensive. The next was my 12 month old $600 DVD player with the dreaded C:13:00 error.

Then I had 2 brand new $1200 defective G500 monitors which they replaced.

Etc. Etc.

Damn, that sucks. I went through similar interations with Panasonic and their DVD-A110 DVD player about six years ago. Known problem with the laser, but Panasonic wouldn't fess up to it and I wound up having to replace it. And as you are aware, DVD players were not cheap back then.

Sorry to hear about all of your problems. Honestly, I stopped buying Sony TVs three years ago. I stick with Toshiba nowadays.

I had one of those, died two months out of warranty. After I read how widespread the problem was, it'll take a heck of a lot of incentive to get me to buy another Sony product.
