<< The use of gadgets such as mobile phones and GameBoys has caused a physical mutation in young people's hands, according to a British Sunday newspaper. >>

<< New research carried out in nine cities around the world shows that the thumbs of people under the age of 25 have taken over as the hand's most dexterous digit, said The Observer. >>

Well, I guess that explains why my right hand is so darn flexible. 🙂

That could be for other reasons. 😉

I posted this in the most recent evolution thread when the poster asked for evidence of humans evolving.
I was surprised no one commented on it.

Well, it's not really evolution since the trait isn't being passed on. Even if it was, it probably wouldn't get passed on very much because the person would be sitting home playing video games instead of spreadin' his genes around to all the fine ladies.

They're calling it a mutation in the article. Whether it gets passed on or not, we'll just have to wait and see.
Although you make a good point 🙂

<< Mutation? Sounds like practice to me. >>

yeah, mutation is the wrong word. It's like saying a very flexible person, gymnist let's say, has mutated 'cause they can do things "normal" people can't. It's a learned skill/ability, not mutation...

Yeah, true, but the article said it came from dialing the cell phones, too, so maybe the thumby person would be using them to call the fine ladies...just a thought 🙂
