What's next? Pointing out that BET is a channel aimed at Blacks (not whites) is racially insensitive?? What about Univision? I don't see North American (in English) lifestyles represented. I also think that by the standard of he article above, that St. Patricks day and Columbus day, along with Christmas and Ramadan should be abolished as racially insensitve. The term African American sis racist, as is W.A.S.P. (Not the Rock Group).

The good thing is that none of them bother me. I could care less if they declare Monday a Lithuanian appreciation day, or every second Tuesday, Black appreciation day, or instead of Christmas we celebrate Gansta Day. It's all the same. It's not hate, but celebrating one groups contribution. Ghettos and yes, even thugs brought us Rap music along with and a new and evolving style of dress and values. It's not good or bad, but a contribution to soceity nonetheless. What's the issue again?

To say someone is "racially insensitive" is to say that you (the one pointing the finger) are racist yourself. Race isn't what holds one back....it's ignorance of yourself. If you find it offensive that someone portrays someone as a maid, or a gardener, you should look in the mirror. If you are not a gardener or a maid, then you are not being targeted so who cares. If you are, you should ask yourself if you are happy. If so, then who cares. Maids are an honorable profession, so is being a gardener. If you are not happy where you are, then maybe you should do something about it instead of whining that someone portrays you unfairly.

well *edit* said.

well put.
The problem with both of you is that you don't care. Which means you feel the same as the kids at this high school. You need to care, because the next time someone pulls off insensitive stunts like this you need to call them out on it. Just think of it this way...if for no other reason the girls will think YOU ARE HOT!

:p

FYI- when you say, "It doesn't bother me why should I care..." thats called APATHY.

Am I the only one who doesn't get the leafblower part? I guess if I lived in a more racially diverse part of the country I would understand this a whole lot more. Anyway, I don't really any reason why the kids should be dressing up anyway. School is suppose to be a enviorment for learning, not entertainment.

Mexicans = Gardeners or Landscapers ... all they know is that their rich parents hire illegal immigrants to do the yard work.. those are the only Mexicans they know anything about.

Here in Texas, many, many Hispanics are employed in the lawn care and construction businesses - many as min-wage workers with leaf-blowers and rakes, many as successful business owners. I don't know the history behind it, but I don't think it's a relatively complex one.

Then maybe they need to change the channel and see that blacks are not only what MTV shows, but what C-Span and the news shows also. Folks like Annan, Condi, Colin, Obama, etc. also are part of the race.
With the exception of perhaps Obama, who is a prominant Democrat, the remaining names on that list are not even embraced by the black community as icons or role models...how can you expect suburban white kids to overlook that which is readily apparent beyond what they see on MTV...all it takes is one Sharpton or Jackson press conference to reinforce certain stereotypes.

This is nothing but a bunch of privledged spoiled kids that have been shielded from reality and don't have parents that are taking enough of a part in their lives to notice that they feel apathetic racists views are a-ok.
This has nothing to do with their being white or privileged...although segregation has been gone for some time, our society still chooses to self segregate, with a lot of stereotypes and narrow minded thinking further degrading the state of race relations in this country...you do realize that there are some fairly strong racists attitudes towards whites in many poor urban minority communities.

I say send them to compton or watts for school for a week, and see if they feel it's cool, then.
Oh, you mean those areas where you can be killed simply for being white.

Watch Laguna Beach and see what these kids are like. They have separated themselves from all other races in social settings.
Whites are not the only race living in these affluent neighborhoods...there is a cross section of wealthy Asians, Persians, Israeli, eastern Europeans...Laguna Beach, and other wealthy Orange Country coastal areas, represent a fairly broad spectrum of races from cultures across the world...I encounter the Orange County elite on a daily basis during my commute to work, and believe me, it isn't just white people driving the luxury cars and living in the McMansions of Southern California.

As for the whole thug angle, these white kids ARE emulating what they see on television...many black entertainers and athletes choose to promote that image, because it resonates with our society...why don't we question these entertainers and athletes for furthering stereotypes to line their own pockets...or is it acceptable in our society for minorities to profit from negative stereotypes of their own race, but unacceptable for whites to emulate that which they now accept as pop culture acceptance.

The LA Lakers just enforced a dress code for its players because they were projecting a negative image...professional athletes should not be attending press conferences and social functions dressed as street thugs, because they ARE role models and kids will emulate their behavior.

Or how about George Lopez and that mind of Mencia guy...their entire comedy routine centers around Hispanic stereotypes...is it ok for us to laugh at "leaf blower" jokes when coming from a Hispanic comedian, but not acceptable for white kids for replicating the joke?

On any day in Los Angeles County, you literally can not go more than 5 or 6 blocks without seeing a Mexican using a leafblower.

Edit: Thug Day sounds.... fun.

someone just needs to put a nice little ass whupping on those kids...that should settle things.
what they need is a student exchange system..bring in some kids from south central for a couple of weeks, send some kids from this prep school to LA, that will change their attitude. and it can be done, hell it doesnt even need to be some ghetto school in LA, I am sure DALLAS has plenty of ghetto, impoverished schools to participate.

They already do that, at least in Minneapolis.
Let me just say it was nothing but a disaster. No kids went into the inner city(big surprise) and the kids who came from the inner city usually spent half their time fighting, selling drugs or in jail.

You have an excuse for everything. I wonder if half of what you say is true.

I live in a not so wealthy part of the South and this thug image is not some MTV phenomenon and does in fact exist in reality. I would venture to say at least 75% of the blacks I see on a day to day basis (under 30) have the gold teeth, baggy pants, bling bling thug image going on. Most of you do not live in a poorer part of Mississippi or Louisiana (Texas has a culture all to itself, but I'm sure thugs are prevalent there as well). It would be great to think of this as brainwashed high school kids emulating things they see on MTV, but the fact of the matter is I'm sure they are emulating what they see in real life. There are many trailer trash communities around here where I am sure there is not a full set of teeth in the entire town, would you care if the students dressed up as Earl the trucker? These people are white, but due to poverty and apathy towards the problems facing their communities and all in all just plain ignorance face many of the same problems and hurdles that the black community faces, so would the same outrage be heard were there to be a redneck day?

Unfortunately, I do live in rural (as if there is anything but) Mississippi. The schools here have mandatory dress codes that are enforced. I don't see the thug cultrue protrayed beyond the baggies and a little jewelry. I have yet to see a gold tooth (maybe cause they can't afford them) and find that the attitudes here towards blacks by the whites are teh same as if this were say 1975.

On Fiesta Day, which was to honor Hispanic heritage, one student brought a leaf blower to school.

Does  at this part make me evil? :D

I do have to ask if they are BOTH WHITE?

Once again I call this very statement an example of racism.

Marshall Mathers is a thug, and WHITE. Obama isn't a thug....and he's BLACK. There is no difference other than their personal outlook (and income). I personally have many thug Puerto Rican buds. Stereotypes are what you make of them. If they offend you, perhaps it's like homophobia. Often the very thing that upsets us the most is our own thoughts. Perhaps you yourself are racist and hate that about yourself, thus tranfer your feelings towards others.

FWIW, my parents family is of differing background and cultures. Neither myself nor my wife could be remotely considered a W.A.S.P. in ANYONES book. Neither of us fits ANY of the representative letters of the acronym.

So, now who's feeling self conscious about seeing colors???

no, its relevent that you are white because no matter how you put it, you'll never be able to see things in the same way as minorities...you can't judge their feelings so its not up to you to say wether this behavior is ok or not.
