Throwing away my 8k7a, any suggestions?

I'm sick of dealing with the 4-in-1 issues with Win2k and my 8k7a. Anybody know of a high quality mobo that's not going to give me all of the annoying bluescreens etc, that the 8k7a gave me?
I've got a 1.33Ghz, 512MB DDR, Lite-On 24x, and a couple of other fun doodads

Who makes the KG-7? All I need is a stable simple mobo. I'm not overclocking or using SCSI devices.

Ummm...why are you using the Via 4in1's? Sure, some people here have recommended it's use with this board, but I never have and I have never installed them. 0 stability problems here (under Win2k) - in fact I have not seen a blue screen in many months (even on my old computer).

Why would you even use the Via 4in1's? Use the AMD AGP Miniport driver and AMD AGP registry entry (for win2k machines), the Microsoft IDE driver that comes with windows, and you're set. Just because it has a 686b south bridge doesn't mean you need to use the 4in1's.

zippy, to answer your question, without the 4-in-1s installed I get a bluescreen on every boot unless I do a Safe Mode. The bluescreen is Inaccessible Boot Device. I don't think it has anything to do with the hard drive. It's one of those relatively new 40GB IBM ones.

The KG-7 is a hybrid board like the 8K7a and uses the via 686b southbridge. So if you do not like via...well....

when you installed the VIA 4 in 1s did you remember to uncheck the AGP vxd driver? don't use via agp driver with AMD chipset...

thats probably the root of your problems, if thats what you did

also, did you try running your mobo without updating to the latest 4in1's? i didnt have any problems before i did install the latest 4in1s, and once i did i started having problems.

Joony, I did remember to uncheck the AGP driver. PyroHale, Windows 2k did not boot until I installed version 4.28a of the 4-in-1s. Upon installing the 4.33 version, everything went to crap again, so I had to go back to the 4.28a version.

So in comparison, which is a better mobo: ECS K7S5A or Abit KG-7 ?

i myself have the same mb,
i've been having alot of issues with it too!
i dont like it, i perfer a simple mb that dont have as much issues as this one has,
for some odd reason after updating my cs1.1 to cs1.3
my comp crashes EVERYTIME in CS, sometimes within 10 seconds sometimes 10 mins,
but it ALWAYS crashes!

it is really pissing me off, I might get a new mb cause I can't play CS 1.3

I haven't flashed my Epox yet. It's still the 3/21/2001 (or close) BIOS. Could this have anything to do with my problems?

if you are set on getting a different mobo (which i strongly recommend you dont do, as the 8k7a is a great mobo), go with the ecs k7s5a. not only is it cheap, it has excellent performance. besides, i think the kg-7 has the same chipset as the 8k7a, which means you would probably have the same problems as you are now.

"i have an issue with my board." if you guys have issues, why don't you rma to try out a new one, in case the old one was fubared. i do agree that the 8k7a is a great motherboard, and i hope that you will find that yours is just a dud, unless you've installed the wrong driver or something.

I've never gotten a blue screen, yet using Win2K. RMA the board if it's not working correctly. Also make sure you have the 100/133 (JP1?) set correctly.

Yep...if you dont want much OC options (this only has FSB adjust), then this is your board It's very fast...and very stable

Odd that your 8k7a has problems...I'm running Win2k and Win98 on mine...I've yet to experience a blue screen (4in1's are installed...but not the AGP--i used AMD miniport...and in win2k, I used SP2's ATA driver, not via's). PS is a Enlight 300W. I dont have a CD-RW now...but there once was a 12x in there. Anyways, I LOVE MY 8K7A! (i should...cost me 135 hehe)

I don't recall what that jumper was for. I'll have to take a look. What would be 'set correctly' in my situation (and to think I used to do this for a living )?

Just another thing to check, which power supply do you have?

Otherwise it might be something physically with your boards IDE channels maybe

I have the KG7-RAID, which is the same as the KG7 but with onboard RAID. I love the board! Besides the shuttle ak-31 it was my only choice since i wanted 4 DDR DIMM slots. I havn't had a blue screen yet, nor a lock-up.

But...The first board I got had a bad AGP slot and i had to RMA it and get a new one (luckily they tested it before they sent it to me). If you order one now i doubt it will have that problem, since it was a problem only with the first batch of them. I highly reccomend the board, but to be honest I've had no other experience with AMD mobo's.
