throughput/speed question

I have my HTPC (10/100) hardwired up to a gig-switch, and then my HP WHS box is also hooked up to same switch. WHS has 10/100/1000 ethernet.

When transferring a file from the HTPC to the server, windows explorer will display my throughput anywhere from 7-9MB/sec when transferring a few large files. Is that what I would expect out of a 10/100 adapter on the PC?

Considering the absolute theoretical max is ~12.5MB/s, and you need to account for overhead. 9MB/s isn't unreasonable though 7MB/s would be a tiny bit low.

Yap, that is what you should get.

Many people are unaware that the number 100Mb/sec. (12.5MB/sec.) denotes the "Speed" of the NIC core chipset capcity and not the functional Computer/OS/Network "Speed" of File transfer.

divide 100 by 8.

1 (B)yte = 8 (b)its

therefore

12.5MB/s = 100Mb/s

Also, I've never seen anything higher than 11MB/s and usually sub 10MB/s in a windows environment.

Get a gig NIC in that thing, they are pretty cheap...granted, windows xp file transferring is really slow.

I've gotten 100MB/s on my GB network going from windows 7 to server 2008.

yeah, been meaning to look for a new nic. Do they make low profile PCI cards? Assuming they do. I need one for the HP slimline.

No it does Not.

However a Giga card by itself does nothing.

Unless other computers have a Giga cards too and they are all plugged into a Giga Switch the card is useless.

Yeah, WHS is connected to gig switch along with this PC. I think all I need is the new PCI card. Cat6 in between.
