At 1 a.m a lot of drivers on the road are either tired, have been drinking or are just not as sharp as they would be during the day. Instead of pulling dangerous stunts you should do whatever you can to keep yourself safe. Let your pride go and move over, even to the left if you have to, and let those tailgaters pass you. I'm sure you've got loved ones waiting for you at home who would be upset if you didn't make it one night.

Let me get this straight: at 1:00 AM people are tailgating you in the right lane when there are two perfectly good lanes to the left?

That would make me RAGE :|

that's the only reason i conduct this little experiment of mine, during normal traffic, i keep up and move with traffic to be condusive to making things flow better for everyone

Do you also light up their faces with a flashlight??

Also, which emoticon accurately represents their facial expression?

I don't care what speed you go in the right (slow) lane as long as it's somewhat near the speed limit. The people that get me mad are the ones that do that in the passing lane(s).

Pass and move over, people. It's not that difficult.

It always does confuse me when I see people driving in the right lane at the speed limit and then slow down and stay behind cars going slower, especially when it's clear to pass.

Obviously, none of you have discovered how much fun you can have with a 1-gallon plastic milk carton filled with used oil, a solenoid and a few feet of wire...especially fun if the road is already slick from rain.

OP is one of the slow drivers that actually have a brain...a rarity, to be sure. He's in the right lane of a 3-LANE highway...what more can he do?

Oh...check the first paragraph of my reply.

No, he definitely does not. If he hit his brakes he'd be sinking to their level. There is nothing wrong with gradually reducing his speed to get them to go around him. They're creating a dangerous situation, and he is ending that situation in the safest way possible. How could anyone possibly be criticizing him for that?

Accelerating next to them is unnecessary, but he needs to accelerate anyway to get back up to 60 mph.

The OP is the reason that more concealed carry permits are not issued.

They are big assholes.
You are little asshole.

I hate when people ride my butt. Especially when there is plenty of room for them to go around.

Agreed. Cruising in the left-hand lane is right up there alongside turning without using a blinker at the top of my driving pet-peeves list.

I mean, I honestly don't care if you cruise at/above/below the speed limit in the left-hand lane (assuming no one else is around). But the moment someone comes up behind you, get out of the way. It's that simple.

But yes, to the OP, being tailgated in the right-hand lane would irk me as well. I'm not saying your response is "right" per se, but it sounds like what I'd be tempted to do.

You're also probably breaking the law. It's illegal in my state to drive more than 20mph below the posted limit.

Bullshit?? So, on those few occasions where it does snow in Virginia, you guys are still required to follow the speed limit, regardless of road conditions? I drove through Virginia during an ice storm. Well, not quite through; I stopped when the roads became nearly impossible to drive on. For the last 3 miles I drove that night on I-95, I was going 5mph or less. EVERY pick-up truck SUV, and other moron who thought his 2WD or 4WD car could drive on black ice, and passed me, ended up wrecking. I feel bad for breaking the law in your state. Where do I turn myself in?

There is a driving too slow for conditions ticket just like driving too fast. You're example would not be too slow for conditions.

Well, he could speed up that extra 5mph at at least go the speed limit...

Of course, if he were doing this in the left lane, it should be legal to take potshots at him with semi-automatic weaponry.

I don't understand why someone would tailgate you in the right hand lane at 1am. I'd be cruising in the middle lane.

However, your 'experiment' is an idiotic and dangerous idea. As was previously mentioned, there are likely to be tired or drunk drivers on the road with you.

Way to be an asshat!

That's under bad road conditions. OP is talking about doing 30 under the speed limit in good conditions on a regular basis. Apples and oranges.

For reasons i don't understand, people insist on tailgating me. Using the speed control, i slowly lower my speed; most drivers pass me about when i hit 45mph, i've gotten some people down to 35. When they go to pass me, i accelerate next to them so i can see their faces; they're mostly pissed off....

edit - speed limit is 65 for reference

I do the same thing. I think you are awesome.

Well I lie, now that gas is cheap I drive fast again.... lol focus ftw

It really wouldn't matter to me. I am seldom in the right lane, but if I was trapped there by traffic and had to follow the OP until the traffic cleared only to see the OP speed up once the traffic opened up and I went to pass he would surely remove any doubts I had about his douche-baginess.

If the OP is accelerating to keep speed with a vehicle who is also accelerating to pass he is likely losing any benefit derived from going 5 mph below the speed limit, but the world is filled with douche-bags, why would it surprise me when another is revealed.
