would using the seat buckle work in breaking the windows?

Have you ever tried to break a car window?

More importantly... have you ever tried swinging a light object tied to a 2.5" thick strap under water with 2 cubic feet worth of arm movement?

OK, you wreck into a river. You vehicle has likely rolled or flipped once. Now, find your center punch, ready-set-go!

Best solution would be to have something inside to door itself to break the window in case of an emergency. Think simple, like a spring loaded center punch in the door, that hits the part of the window that doesn't ever leave the door. It would work if the windows was 100% up, 50% up or completely down (not that it would need to work then).

that would be cool until you hit the button while going 75 on the highway...

No, THAT will be

Same could be said about the hood release, yet... Yes, I realize there is an extra latch on that, but how many times have you reset it? I'm thinking one for each window, or at least driver/passenger and maybe a master to blow all of them, like the window lock. In a different location of course.

This wouldn't be impossible to engieneer safely.

I wonder if I could break it with my elbow. Or get on your back and kick the window. I also think I could break the window with a palm strike, but I never tried.

Leg kick comes first, due to brute force. Elbow comes second, due to more force per surface area. Palm strike comes last due to less force more surface area.

I thought it was a well known fact that the proper way to break a window is a sharp point. The less surface area the strike covers, the more easily it would break. I wonder if I could do it with my swiss army doo-hickey.

Anyway, according to the abc link above, I'm reading they didn't just veer off the road... they went through an empty lot also. Either someone jammed the accelerator or there was alcohol involved.

I know about the spring loaded center punch because some tool did thousands of dollars worth of damage with one in my home town, then I saw it in print suggesting they would be perfect to use to escape from a submerged vehicle.

Have you ever tried breaking a Volvo driver side window? Its impossible too even with a crowbar.

I kid you not.

If I may go off-topic for a second, one of the articles mentioned that in the cell phone call, one of the victims mentioned that they(they being undefined, I'm not sure how many people it means) didn't know how to swim. In 2004, how would someone not know how to swim to the point where they can at least stay afloat? Water safety is something that was drilled in to my head at least since I was a wee-tyke.

Ever see what a handfull of the ceramic material around a spark plug (break a sparkplug) does to a window? As a kid we used to call these... NINJA ROCKS!

I have no fvcking idea, but I know a couple people who can't swim. As far as I'm concerned that's like not being able to tell time.

Why didn't they just shoot the windows out with their gun? That's what I would have done.

I don't like that title and the way it focuses on the SUV. Why can't CNN just say "car"? Now there is going to be more cr*p about SUVs being more unsafe in river accidents than cars.

I don't like how it said drown. It makes it seem like water's unsafe. The correct PC title would be:

Unspecified number expire in possible accident.

Of course I could be talking about 2 bottles of milk going bad in my fridge when the power went out, but hey, at least I'm not pissing anyone off.

What's stupider is some guy ran in and was banging on the doors and windows and roof with a flashlight. The women just screamed and didn't get out.

If they didn't die there, they'd have gotten themselves lost in the woods on the way back to bed from the bathroom at night.

i feel more pain for this guy though...

Rafael Miranda said he saw the Jeep go off the road and into the water. He grabbed a flashlight and ran to the vehicle, banging on its roof and windows as he attempted to free the victims.

"I tried and I tried and I tried, but I couldn't do it," Miranda said. "They were conscious. They were screaming, screaming 'Help me, help me!"'

that image will stick on him forever.

I hope everyone that reads this will go out and purchase a centerpunch to keep in the glove compartment. You never know...

They don't cost much either....$10-$15.

Rocks and bricks are even cheaper. Why not just a clawhammer? You could use the clawpart to pull the hole open larger, plus the swing would be faster and less risk of slicing your wrist open as it goes through the window with a center punch.

There's an episode of top gear where one of the guys experimented with letting all the water in before pushing the door out. That didn't work out. It was 9th November 2003.

So apparently the best thing to do is to try to open the door first when it hits the water and just get out. Open the window if you couldn't get out through the door.

I feel sorry for the three ladies, their friends and the rescuers.
