who cares?

I like that it remembers what I searched for. It makes future searches easier.

You people really do need some tin foil hats
Careful man. They might know if you have a penis!

I think google was one of the first to have ads that were not random bullshit. Before google, you could go to a tech website and see ads for tampons and dildos. Eventually this changed so the ads had something to do with the page, such as computer ads on a tech site. Next step is to tailor the ads to the user instead of the site. Maybe you've been searching about hepatitis medications, so you'll see hepatitis medication ads on random websites. They know your hep has the titis.

again...why would I care?

Why would anyone care?

I don't get it
First off, I'm against it out of principle. It's none of their fuckin' business. Second, being denied employment, insurance, and having your searches distorted by a lawyer in trial are very real concerns. Your ex turns up missing? I hope you haven't done any reading on serial killers. Researching kiddie porn? I hope that doesn't turn up in a custody hearing...

The barrier for access from companies is much lower than it is for a private party. You come to my house, you better have a warrant. A lot of companies will bend over and spread at the asking. It doesn't even have to under court order. I'm not willing to let a disinterested 3rd party affect my life, especially when there's something I can do about it.

1984 doesn't happen overnight. It comes a little bit at a time. It makes things easy for you, it protects you from terrorists, and it keeps your kids safe... After awhile you're so safe, you can't do anything...

F this. I like having my search history. Couldn't care less if people saw what I search for...I'm only human.

edit: hahaha, I saw some interesting items there. Damn, I am such a perv.

so I won't look up kiddie porn or murder anyone. Problem solved

Are you people that paranoid that you care about this kind of thing? You throw a fit over this but condone federal agents groping children and the elderly at airports?

You all have issues.

You don't /have/ to murder anyone, that's the fuckin' point.

Who the hell condones the TSA circus?? It's only dipshits that can't think, and want the government to "protect" them. People willing to give up freedom for safety. I'm pretty sure anyone who rejects surveillance on the web is against all the other bullshit the government tries to pull "for our benefit".

And we come right back around. I DON'T use their search, and I'm ready to dump their email. The only thing I don't have a replacement for is GoogleVoice. After that, I'll be completely deGoogled. My only other account is YouTube, and I'm not especially attached to that. I can use it without logging in.

so you want to use the services, but not help make them better? The site you linked to uses Google. Why not use Bing and be done with it? You can replace GV very easily. Might as well sign up for a Live email account too. Then you can use Break.com for videos.

Why the hell would you complain about a company's ways, when you reap the benefit of them?

Mine was already off, but I've switched 100% to bing for all searching since Google's announcement.

I don't get any benefit from being tracked. DuckDuckGo aggregates results from several engines, Google being only one of them. Why would I want to get tracked by Bing? Being tracked by them isn't any better than being tracked by Google. Same with the email. I'm likely going with lavabit which offers encrypted storage for a very reasonable price...

For GoogleVoice, I like having one phone number for everything, and being able to add/remove devices in minutes. What do you have for that?

That page is placebo for privacy freaks. Google is still saving your entire history, it's just not displayed to you when you turn it "off" there.

Not really worried. Probably 98% of my searches are using Chrome's highlight/right-click to search for things of such transitory interest that they're practically random.

And offer things to me based on my tastes? Good luck with that.

I turned mine off as soon as I found out about that "feature".

There really needs to be laws about how much information a company can collect on people. Google is becoming ridiculous in it's hell bent effort to harvest every bit of info on everyone. By adding stupid features like Instant search they have forced us to login to the google account in order for the "off" setting to stick so even searching is tracked under your account. The fact of having to be "logged in" to a search engine is just wrong.

I've been strongly considering to completely stop using any Google related products and stop using my google account. I do have a youtube and adsense account so those would be the only two things I would use. At least there's not much they can track with just those two things alone as opposed to if I continue to use their search too.

It's also a matter of time till they buy out Facebook. I can easily see that happen. That is a gold mine of info they would love.
