Just an errant thought, but what about farmers? No prestige, no money... But without food, the world would collapse immediately.

there is always someone else who can run a farm, sh!t we are almost to the point where you could build industrial robots to grow and harvest food.

Agreed.

Science designs new technologies, and generates wealth.

Bankers redistribute wealth. They contribute nothing.

Law and politics are important, but these days it's going backwards...but that's another topic.

Laws and politics allow people to affect public policy and how society is run as a whole. Banking gives people ridiculous amounts of money to affect politicians. While science and engineering are important, it is ultimately bound by governmental policy, funding etc. The engineers in msft might do the grunt work but in the end it's the business men that decide what needs to be developed.

Politics and law are important, but we don't need more kids focusing on these fields. We've got a severe lack of talented engineers and scientists, and it's beginning to show. Japan beat us in hybrids, and they're about to beat us on hydrogen fuel cell cars.

Basic liberties have been here. We don't need millions of people focusing on its development. We are however, in the information age. Technology is everything.

And right now are politicians are declaring war on nations on false intelligence, spying on the public, and putting a complete blind eye to the ~3 million illegal immigrants pouring into our nation. They're consuming government provided services without paying taxes, and not integrating into our culture. They're taking jobs from Americans, because they're willing to work a few dollars/hour less to save those fat business men more money, while selling out America.

Law right now is completely fvcked up. A 30 year old female teacher can molest 15 year old boys and get 6 months house arrest. Women can make false allegations of rape, and when they're found to be false, they get a slap on the wrist. But if a 17 year old black guy receives consensual oral sex from a 15 year old, it's 10 years in prison. We actually have states trying to ban abortion completely again.

American businessmen are selling out America's future by optimizing profits in the short term and selling out our future in the long term. Outsourcing is an example. Another example is hiring illegals to save a few bucks/hour. Another example is the automobile industry...they rather save a few bucks by sacrificing build quality than improve brand name by providing a reliable product. Toyota's business model is destroying domestic cars.

Many successful tech businesses are run by people familiar with both business and engineering.

No matter how many brilliant business men or politicians we have, our nation's downfall will be because China, Japan, Korea, and a possible real European Union have better technology.

QFT. Though, of course most "empires" (if you want to call the US an empire) eventually fail.
