Banking is definitely one of the most powerful careers. Dealing with money is pretty serious.

Then again, i'm a finance grad.

I think it's 99% prestige. Parents want children they can brag about.

Come on, a computer geek forum and no one has mentioned IT is the most powerful. With out the IT guys all the advances in tech couldn't happen. Doctors can't use their fancy machines, Bankers can't trade online. Lawyers can't corrispond via email or look for Nigerian scam artists.

It's the engineer that designed those machines that you're using. The software developer created the programs you're using. It's the finance people who funded the engineer to build the machines.

IT (nondeveloper) is backoffice work. You support the people making the world.

I thnk that many of you are confusing powerful with neccessary. Civilization is built on sanitation. Could you really call sewage workers "powerful?"

let's not confuse "powerful" with "important". they are not the same in this case. i'm going to say banking, because money = power almost any way you slice it. in fact, politics and law can be (and are usually) largely influenced by the financial world.

i do like TechnoPro's question though. i suppose to really answer your question, we'd have to ask what kind of "power" you're talking about.

Well, law and banking are pretty powerful in that they are fast-track careers with large financial incentives. JDs graduating out of a Top 10 law school can make $120,000 easy, and Ivy League salary packages of $160,000+ are common. And this is for people with little work experience beyond internships and paralegal work (most jump to law school straight out from undergrad.)

Bankers do even better, with base undergrad salaries starting around $75k (or $90k in NYC) and bonuses averaging between $8k-$15k. MBAs from Harvard/Wharton/Stanford going to top-tier banks in NYC can get a total salary package well over $200,000. Not bad for someone who's 26-27 years old.

Politics is a much harder career path to develop, but I imagine most politicians are former lawyers who've managed to make friends in powerful circles and develop a war chest of money to support their campaign. A lot of the more successful politicians also went to an Ivy League school and have a network of powerful alumni. So I guess even though holding public office doesn't pay as much in terms of salary, the respect/prestige and influence that comes along with it is worth much more, and if you've played your cards right (Clinton, Bush, Kerry etc.) you're already rich!

In law you get to decide people's fate, in politics you get to issue edicts, and in banking you get to make people debt slaves while creating money out of thin air.

No, I think that banking, law and politics all influence each other in a sort of continuum. There's no point trying to slice hairs between them, but rather see them as an aggregate. Bankers need lawyers who need politicians who need lawyers who need bankers who need politicians...know what I mean?

Perhaps in terms of prestige. I'd still say medecine should replace one of the two.

Medicine's like engineering...sure, they're skilled workers, but other people tell them what to do. Their research (and therefore the way they influence the course of society) is directed to them from on high.
