Three months gym

Here is a picture of the shape I was in prior to starting in March taken at New Years.

Here is my picture after my 12th workout week

Dropped about 30lbs, strength on it's way back up (workout weights for reps: 95lb curls, 235lb squats, 70lb db's for bench)

Nothing spectacular yet, but I am looking really good in clothes 🙂.

I am turning 39 next week...thought this would take a lot longer coming back. I was out of training for 4 years with a major elbow injury that I finally got treated.

very nice

I am just starting out after not working out for the last 6 years... already noticing an improvement after just a few weeks

I am in and out in 60mins, a little less on non-ab days.

My journal is here: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2055976

I'd probably be a bit more slim now, but I am not giving up the 21 beers (7 each day friday, saturday, sunday) I like to have. I do stick with Mich Ultra though.

I also had one week during this when I was on vacation and probably drank 50+ beers over that.

During the week I am strict though and eat well.

Yeah alcoholic beverages are my biggest enemy as well, I have way too much fun going out with friends and getting drunk. Its no huge deal atm, not gonna start cutting for another couple months.

So far so good alkemyst

Nice work.

Post a more clear photo of before.

Considering the progress you've made, try to limit yourself to a couple of drinks; obviously you don't want to (seriously...50 beers???) but it seems like you'd progress a lot faster if you gave your liver a break, providing that you truly drink as much as you say you do.

Don't have many of before. That was the best one I came across.

My limit now is about 7 beers a day. I usually only do that on the weekend. If I am on vacation then I still try to keep to about 7 a day, but that's over the entire trip.

probably not at this time in my life. I enjoy it. If I were into sweets or chips or something like that maybe it'd be different. It's pretty much my only vice.

Good results mate!

7 beers for 3 days? Are these 250ml bottles of pints?

A guy I know would be in a fair amount better shape if he didn't get smashed 1-2x every single week...smashing done £50-100 worth of booze isn't going to help you get lean...he doesn't touch the stuff mid week though.

You won't convince him. His wife threatened to leave him partially due to his alcohol consumption, and it did not sway him. ATOT had a dogpile on him and he fought everybody off. He enjoys it, he knows it's not the best thing to do for his fitness or relationships, but he's a big boy and can decide on his own, I guess.

That said, congrats on your progress, Alkemyst.

they are 12oz. I am hardly smashed after 7 beers over the course of about 7 hours.

I have to see how lean I can get on it. in my 20's and early 30's I was drinking tons more and less than 10%BF.

Again though beer is about the only bad thing I consume. I don't snack.

Muscle memory.

I stopped lifting for about 6 months and started back again 2 weeks ago.

I'm already back to 90-95% strength, but the flab is still there.

Muscle memory is neural by nature. That's not how lifting works. The dominant predictor of strength is muscle size (cross-sectional area). If you maintained your size from your last lifting period, then sure, that's a logical conclusion. Muscle memory only has a tiny portion to do with it though.

To alke: looks like you're doin' alright, man. Don't get too crazy though 😛

We're probably not talking about the same muscle memory. I'm just using the colloquial and not too scientific term for this phenomenon.

Definitely the case because my muscles have atrophied clearly (easy to tell in a mirror), but they've come back super quickly. I've been eating pretty well to make sure this happens.

I'm not going to thread crap all over alke's journal, but the way the author interpreted that info was very questionable. I'll PM you the reason why.

SociallyChallenged, I'd advise you not to get into a semantic argument with MJinZ, even if you're 100% correct. 😛

LOL... this is not semantics. There are different definitions of Muscle Memory and people throw them around differently. I never researched it much, I just know the version bodybuilders like to use to refer to this phenomenon.

However, I do realize muscle memory is more readily used for things like riding a bike or typing etc...

I used to be on Bodybuilding.com from my younger days of lifting (college and end of HS), haven't been seriously lifting in many years though.
