Three different Wireless LAN PC Cards $50 ea. + shipping @ tigerdirect.

<< I'd check resellerratings before you buy from tigerdirect...just a little heads-up.🙂 >>

True...maybe we can pricematch though! Does Staples sell any of these? 😀

<< Does anyone have experience with any of these? Which one is the best? >>

From my experience with the brands:

Lucent is the best(except for Cisco)
3Com is pretty darn good
IBM I haven't used, But the picture looks an aweful lot like the Lucent, so I'm guessing it's a re-badged Lucent/Orinoco silver.

Notice that of these three, the 3com is the only one with 128-bit WEP(Yes it's useless, but some of us still use it 😉).
The other two cards only support 64-bit.

I'm going to pick up the 3-Com, since I don't own one yet.

I buy from tigerdirect fairly regularly, without problem. Don't put too much stock in ResellerRatings. The only problem I've ever had with TigerDirect is they run out of stock on some items. YMMV of course.

I can't find these cards anywhere else...Does anyone know of a store (with a pricematch policy) that carries these?

Of those three, the Lucent is the best. The Lucent WaveLan 802.11b (NOT to be confused with the 802.11) card is the old labeling for the Lucent (Agere) Orinoco cards. When you install them with them in WinXP, the will be called Orinoco. Just need to flash them to the latest Orinoco firmware.

3com I think is ditching those cards in favor of their new one that has a retractable XJACK antenna.

The IBM one is a relabelled Lucent card usually only sold direct from IBM. I see varying reports about flashing them to true Lucent firmware. But for the same price, avoid the possible driver problems and firmware headaches and get the Lucent card. That way, when Lucent updates their software, you'll get it before IBM has to rebagging and stick it on their website.

Also, for anyone who doesn't think WEP is useful, you should do a little more reading and understand why it's weak. You'll see that Lucent and Cisco are patching the holes just like any other piece of software with a defect in it.

I have ordered from tigerdirect at least a dozen times (including a few weeks ago when I picked up the Lucent card) and I have never had a problem with them.

For anyone worried about ordering one of these, I ordered Saturday and I arrived Today(Monday). I got the 3-com, but haven't spun it up yet to test it's performance compared to my Orinoco.

Dudes, before everyone gets all goopy over TigerDirect, just wanted to let you know I've been screwed by them twice. I made the bold mistake of ordering a PC from them and they send different components in it than what was verbally agreed upon over the phone (won't make that mistake again). It might turn out OK if you are only ordering odds and ends, but as soon as you need customer support or a return, forget it. There is a reason people gave them bad ResellerRatings!

Yep, Tiger Direct rates at the bottom for service, and near the top for scaming you.

0. Ordered a CPU. Got it the next day.
Thought it was a great company, even though the "NEW" CPU only had NO warranty, since I failed to buy a heatsink at same time.

<< Please note that all processors may be returned only for defective exchange only. You must purchase a compatible heatsink on the same order as the processor in order to preserve your warranty. We are not able to accept returns for refunds on processors under any circumstances. >>

1. Next order they failed to follow through on Rebate. So the $20 memory ended up costing $50.
2. Another time they changed price after it was in cart, and would not refund difference even though website price stayed correct days later.

3. Last time ordering, and upon checkout, someone elses complete info was listed, including address, phone etc.
As a test, I easily left billing address as his, and changed shipping address to a bogus one.
Would have went through without problems.
Next I emailed TigerDirect about the severe lapse in security 4 times. NO response.
Last, tried emailing President of TigerDirect 2 times about security. Still, never responded.
I even gave them all the info about the two accounts. They never fixed it.
Checked back in about a week, and the others info with the new bogus shipping address was still there under my user name.
Changed info, then cancelled all email's and accounts with Tiger Direct at that point.
Just checked again today (6 months later), and the info is still screwed up.
I changed the account's address to read "warning, this account popped up when I entered my username and password, etc"
I left the other guys phone number, and it's still there.
Since it's under my account, I guess I can post it: 210-652-20xx. First name also Robert. AFB TX. Maybe it's your phone number?

Just read there Privacy Policy:

<< Our website security is unmatched anywhere on the Internet. Your name, your personal information and especially your credit card number are NEVER stored on the Internet with our system. >>

Strange how I just reformatted HD last week, yet info from 6 months ago is still there. Wait, now I see. They don't store the info on "their system". Instead, they must store it on someone elses "Please steal my info system".

Hopefully, the bad word will get out about TigerDirect, and they will correct all issues.
Until then, You have been warned.

ResellerRatings is the absolute very best place to get info about a company.
Highly accurate.

I have no doubt that many people have had trouble with tigerdirect. I would never order say a CPU or motherboard from them after all the complaints I've heard on this forum, and their prices are often very high as well. But, I ordered the Lucent waveLan card from them and it arrived without any issues less than a week later. I've also order a 3Com usb nic card from them and that arrived just fine as well. Ordering smaller items that are in stock has never been a problem for me. Also, I highly recommend the lucent card. It works great with my school's wireless Lan; I get much better range than my friend with a Linksys card he bought at Staples.

Don't buy the 3Com. The software interface is terrible. A big box pops up and says "Searching for Access Point" when you are out of range of the AP.... and it constantly pops up even after you close it. It really is a big pain in the butt.

The Lucent and IBM cards are identical and they both work great. They don't use 128-bit encryption, only 64-bit. Rock solid software and compatibility. Only avoid if you have to use 128-bit encryption. (not a problem in a home network) If you have to use 128-bit encryption, spend a little more and get the IBM 128-bit, Lucent Gold, or Cisco cards.

if you want a 3COM Xjack wireless card. Try DELL. They have it for $80-10%=$72 plus free next day shipping. I think TigerDirect charges about $10 shipping, so the final cost is comparable.
