The government on Sunday raised the national threat level to orange, the second-highest, saying attacks were possible during the holidays and that threat indicators are "perhaps greater now than at any point" since Sept. 11, 2001.

Wasn't capturing Saddam Hussein supposed to stop all terrorism in the world?

I'm surprised there hasn't been a bombing in a Shopping Mall or Theatre yet.

Those are small potato attacks. I think they'd go for something that would kill more people.

Orange? Please, that means absolutely nothing. I suppose the change of threat level is tied to increased levels of chatter in the system or some meaningless statistic which bears no relevance to an actual attack. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if the cells all went dark for at least a couple of months prior to an operation - just to game the system. Do we seriously think they're that stupid?

Sporting event would be my guess.

That's always been my fear. People celebrating a holiday, tens of thousands of people gathered in close quarters at one of the Bowl games, televised live to the whole country. It would be the very definition of terrorism. Here's hoping we're wrong.

Expect a lot of this around October of next year. Many predict it will be too dangerous to hold an election.

What's that old saying by Lucius? The one Caligula loved so much? Let them hate so long as they fear?

I think Saddam was let out on bail until his trial that is why the threat level has increased.

A ferry might be a likely target ?

I've often wondered if the "Threat Level" was politicly manipulated.
If the "National Security Agency" gets some bad press, they can raise the threat level,
the word goes out on the air ways & people think they need the agency.
Kinda a free advertizeing thing.
I've seen it in the past. Our local police depart was invesigated because of their corruption.
After it was over, they went on a advertizing campaign to get back the respect they needed to stay in power and do their job.
(if the people knew they were corrupt, they would get no citicen help, & that's 80% of how they make arrests.)
So the radio had free public service anouncements about a million times a day it seamed.

ATTENTION:
This is officer (jerks name here) of the Police Department, be sure to wear your seat belt. bla bla bla.

It went on for months after the investigation.
It was pathetic to hear some of the corruptest officers claiming to care about us.

the threat level is "orange", but you are still free to go about your lives (consume). under no circumstances should you stop your holiday shopping.

does the threat-level publicity have the side-effects of increasing paranoia/xenophobia (watch out for brown people acting suspicous) and enhancing the perceived necessity of ridge's internal security office? maybe.

peace all - lets try to keep a level head about all this & encourage those around us to think for themselves.

Well, if there is an attack, the shrub has a vested interest in not preventing it.

It would be better if you were all smart enough to see through the bullshit

**FYI - the above was a JOKE, incase some have trouble realizing it**

So what is going to be the targets? Anyone have any guesses? Something in New York when packed with a couple million folks around the change of the Year?

By The way those that are called Bush Bashers or whatever don't dare say anything remotetly specific that could be interpeted as some kind of real threat as it will not be considered free speech. A Judge ordered a guy jailed as a Terrorist for saying a remark that would've normally been considered protected under the first ammendment of free speech but now there is no such thing for this particular administration. I don't know if this is a permanent thing that the 1st ammendment does not apply to speech about a sitting U.S. President or only this particular sitting President.

Any of the experts in here work there or with the Judicial system that handed down this decision care to chime in and elaborate?

You might want to give more info than some "I heard about.." before you ask for someone to answer, and you probably could start a different thread for that. Just a thought.
