I was actually looking at this one. 1st-Gen Ryzen Mobile 4C/8T, 2500U, but only 4GB RAM, and a 1TB SATA HDD. Does have the required FHD (1080P) screen, though, 15.6". Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (5575).

Reviews are decidedly mixed, but there are a number of reviews that describe tech-savvy users, upgrading the RAM and replacing the SATA HDD with SSD (and it apparently has an NVMe socket too!), and describing the laptop as great, and a great bargain.

The other reviews appear to be from "normies", who complain that the laptop is sluggish and unreliable. (Well, 4GB RAM and a 5400RPM HDD, WOULD make it "sluggish", as far as unreliable, maybe they got a bad unit?)

If I had $330, I'd take my chances. I've been perusing laptops on ebay, and it's hard to find a FHD 4C Ryzen Mobile (2500U or better) laptop, for under $400. I don't care how much RAM it has, as long as it has two slots to put in some DDR4 SO-DIMMs. I might even boost mine to 32GB if I got one of these. (Current Newegg sale has some GSKill DDR4 SO-DIMMs, maybe 2667, 32GB kit for $109.99.)

Edit: This wouldn't be so much for gaming, although it's probably capable of low-end gaming. It would be to replace my Bay Trail dual-core Atom laptops, which have been reliable, but are getting a bit long in the tooth, and my "baby Ryzen" APU laptops, quad-core Puma+ core APUs in my Lenovo laptops, which are decent with an SSD and a DDR3 RAM upgrade, but they're still no Ryzen APU.

Then they have a 2700U with 8GB of RAM, for $449.99.

Probably the right choice. Ryzen mobile just doesn't have that much punch. Yet.

I am kind of surprised 4gb is a option in a laptop in 2019 given how cheap 8gb is. I guess if you mix the 2 you can certainly say that just maybe that would make it sluggish. Then again it sounds like a border line disposable unit and most normies wouldn't know about upgrades use it for a year or few and rid of it quickly and get the next one. Given how cheap that thing is, there should be 2 options for a hard drive. A bigger spinner or a smaller ssd. Given the low specs its looking more like a Facebook browsing lap top with some light work tossed in so i would be all over a ssd option but we need planned obsolescence apparently in the lower end lap tops right?

Putting 4gb and a 5,400rpm into a laptop in 2019 is planned obsolescence not giving one damn what anyone else says.

Only reason to get a 4 GB laptop today is to drop in another SO-DIMM and get dual channel cheaply. Instead of getting a 1x8GB config (yay, thanks OEMs). Granted, 8GB SO-DIMMs should be getting pretty cheap these days.

Not sure where that lap tops cpu benches but it has to be at least as good as a second generation i5 lap top. My wife had one and it was very responsive in 2018 but it had a cheap ssd and 8gb dual put into it.

Oem are typically bogging down a new out of box deal with enough start up stuff to perhaps make you rush on over to a geek squad for a ram upgrade? My neighbor had a Vista Compaq Presario and she told me she was having a 30 minute boot up time and sure enough it did. I slapped a single 4gb into that deal and we cut the time down to a couple minutes. All the free trial stuff anti virus and stuff about choked the life out of that deal. Not sure whats worst 2gb in a Compaq in 2007 or 4gb in a Dell in 2019. I haven't had 4gb as a norm in a desk top since 2006.

They are laptops in the sense you can carry them and drop them on a desk near a bigger monitor and a mouse+keyboard plugged to the wall. But sometimes you can't carry your desktop and need your gaming fix.

I have a Dell G7 i7 8750H - 16GB DDR4 2666 - GTX 1060 MaxQ - 512GB NVME - 1TB HDD. I have less than $600 wrap up in it, so a price to performance winner. Going to spend another $70 or so on a 120Hz screen since the 1080p 60Hz it came with is sub par. Would not trade my desktops for it, but stoked every time I fire it up for a session when I am not home.

The results for Final Fantasy XV are interesting, for 99th percentile stock 9900K is worse than all 8c+ Ryzen 3k chips. Only once overclocked to 5GHz (which may no longer be possible for new chips, thanks KS) it manages to pass them a little. The most interesting part is that 9700K effortlessly flies by all of them even at stock, showcasing how counterproductive SMT apparently is in that game (I wish THW tested both 9900K and any of the Ryzen 3k chips with SMT off following this result).
