I have to replace wheel studs on my car because the studs have become brittle with age and also due to "overtorquing" by the tire shop when changing and rotating tires and was wondering if the threads on lug nuts and wheel studs are a standard size. I was going to try pick up both online, but it doesn't look like they sell the lug nuts, just the studs. Can I just pick some up at the local auto shop store and they'll fit?

most are M12x1.25 or M12x 1.5 aleast thats what i see in the import world. Overall yes Wheel studs should be at your local shop, About $1-3 a stud locally. And same goes for the lug nut.

I bought a box of 5 studs online at rockauto.com for like $3 and added it on top of my brake rotor order and didn't cost anything extra to ship.

Why buy online? Studs are really cheap. And if you buy them at your friendly local auto parts store, you can always return if they are wrong.

I bought a stud for a Neon the other day, it was like $1.

If the studs are the pressed in kind you may have a problem keeping new ones in the hub. Sometimes they work but more often than not I end up putting a small tack weld on each stud to hold them. You may get lucky but don't be surprised if the new ones are not all that tight in the hub.

To minimize the possibility of having this problem it is better to use a press to remove the studs as beating them out with a big hammer tends to wallow out the hole to a certain degree which prevents the new studs from getting a good grip in the hub.
