THAT IS FUSKING DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You don't know what people do in the showers, or wait, yes we do, people piss and wash off their own filth. Do you like walking on that sorta thing?

Having said that, bring the bloody things. I can't imagine what one could have contracted from the dirty shower floors. In addition:

1) Basket for your laundry
2) Carrying case for all your toiletries
3) Swiss Army Knife/Tools
4) Extra cat5
5) Duct tape
6) Isolation headphones/canalphones

...and the most important of all....THESE!!!

Ive never worn shower sandals, and i know exactly what people do in the shower, soap has this cleansing effect that ive noticed. Havent gotten any fungi

i didn't read any of the other replies.. but from my experience, this is all you need.

all your bathroom stuff like toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant ....obvious things.
pillow
blanket
bed sheet
trusty alarm block
a small lamp for when your roommate goes to sleep and u need a light
shower sandals
towels
all your clothes and shoes
computer
pots and pans if u plan on cooking
plates and forks/spoons/knives
boxes of easy to make food late at night like ramen, mac n cheese, etc.

that's pretty much all you need
rest are all extras like tv, game console, speakers, fridge

it depends on your dorm regarding the shower sandals. my first year i lived in a high rise and all the girls wore shower sandals. the bathrooms were cleaned every weekday and we still did it. and we're all pretty clean girls.

my second and third years i had my own private bathroom that i shared with only one other person, and that was cleaned once a week. it wasn't needed then, since it was practically like sharing my bathroom at home with my brothers and sister.

as for things to bring...
- xl sheets
- dvd's/cd's (don't bring too many, or don't bring the cases. you need the space.)
- alcohol (depends on you, i didn't drink)
- $$$ (to go out)
- desk lamp
- shower caddy
- cup o noodles/easy mac/pasta anytime

check with your dorm, they may have regulations on fridges/microwaves. mine did not allow you to bring your own microwave but you could bring your own fridge or rent the microfridge from them.

I didn't wear shower sandals at school.

I got an invincible case of athlete's foot. Seriously.

I still freaking have it six years later. No cream, no spray, no prescription can touch it. :(

I think one of the most important things is the mini hotpot or toaster oven. I think they may restrict these as it may be a fire hazard... can't recall... but they were late-night saviors many-a-times.
