I just finished watching "Grave of the Fireflies" and this have got to be the saddest Cartoon/Anime ever made.
Have anyone else seen it? I recommend this movie, made very well, story line is slow but that's the mood.

If you have recommendations about other great cartoon/anime movies please share it.
If you don't think this is the saddest cartoon/anime please tell us why or offer a title that is more suited.

Name the saddest cartoon/anime you've ever watched and if you would recommend it or not. Please keep spoilers to yourselves thx.

I think GOTF is it too. Roger Ebert wrote a good review of it when he included it in his top 100 movies of all time: link. What struck me was how the animators captured the nuances of facial/body expressions (esp. of the little girl Setsuko), I've never seen it done that way before.

werd, i can not think of any other anime that come close to the tragic and sadening qualities of Grave of the Fireflies.

I started crying when i know the end was coming :(

Yeah, I'd have to agree.

I remember watching GOTF and Boys Don't Cry in the same day. What a recipe for a depressing evening. A friend came over later and suggested watching American History X. I almost wanted to punch him in the face.

Is this a movie or a series? If it's a movie I'll see if I can get my hadns on it, but I don't have the time to try and get the series cheap or free...

Kenshin is pretty sad at times, the final OAV was pretty sad also. :(

Hmm.. I don't know about sad, but Mononoke Hime is pretty good. Kinda sad I guess, but great nonetheless.

When Optimus Prime died, saddest moment in Cartoon history

Grave of the Fireflies, I got to check that out, too bad any Japanese movie/anime cost like $40

I have Grave of the Fireflies on DVD. It's so depressing, I haven't watched it in awhile.

If you want to watch the saddest cartoon/anime ever made, watch the La Blue Girl series.

I find some anime a little disturbing..

Japan seems to be obsessed with under-aged/barely legal girls.. anime is evidence of this..

There is also a legal market in Japan for teenage girls used knickers..

Anyway, I remember watching GOTF in my freshmen Japanese class. Very good movie from what I remember. Everything was building up to that ending and everyone just kinda sat there with their jaw dropped and teary eyed.

no anime is as disturbing as grave of the fireflies. and its good to boot.

boys don't cry.. eh.. thats nothing. the only effect that movie had on me was to forever ruin that actress in my eyes. she looks like a guy...iew..

you need to see this movie then. it has nothing to do with school girls.

I have a friend who loves travelling to the east. In fact he's in Taiwan for the next 10 months now. I forget what country he said he was in at the time (maybe Japan?) but he said they have vending machines with barely legal girls panties that are "garanteed" to have been worn or something. Includes a picture of the girl who supposedly wore the underwear. Dunno if its bs or not, he's not the type that makes those sorts of things up.

Just an interesting/disturbing FYI

I think that ep 55 of Kenshin (Tragedy in the Storm) was incredibly sad. That series (series only) was incredibly sad as Kenshin wandered, trying to atone for his past crimes. Especially the sub-story involving Soujirou. So sad.

Tekkaman was sad in the sense that the main character tries his hardest to block his own family from his memory while he has to kill them to keep the Earth safe.

But you're right, Grave of the Fireflies was the only one of those that I actually cried during, thinking about my little brother and sister and if we were in that situation.

What was even sadder than GOTF was the awful English track on the DVD. :(:(

Fortunately, I checked out the subbed version first, so my experience of watching it wasn't totally destroyed.
