Thoughts on this web sever setup

I am planning on a building a small web server, running Apache and Windows XP.

It will be used for:
remote file access while at school and work
possibly hosting a small family blog with some pictures and stories

I have everything from some older builds except for a newer mobo, cpu, memory, and video card.

Here are my choices:
Memory: 2GB DDR2 667
CPU: AMD Phenom 9850 2.3Ghz Quad Core
Mobo:GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD
Video card:EVGA 256-P1-N400-LR GeForce 6200 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI 2.1

I choose to go with the slower AMD instead of Intel because of the lower power consumption and lower heat generation. Is this a good idea?

After a little research, it seems it would be best to go with a 45 HM chip due to the power consumption and heat generation. Which is better for this application, Intel or AMD?

You could probably get away with using a dual core Celeron. Is that video card part of the motherboard? Get a motherboard that uses a integrated video card instead. That will be less power used.

If you buy a mobo with build in video, is it possible to upgrade it later with a video card?

As described above in the OP a P-III with 1GB RAM would do very well too.

If your plan is for the computer to be a sever and you want to build, new then this would work well and would take 40 Watts or less.

If your plan is to use it in the future for other tasks, then you have to design it according to these tasks (which you did not described).

If you buy a Mobo with onboard Video and a PCIe slot you can upgrade the Video, but Video oer-se is Not the answer to computing power.

intel power consumption is pretty low...honestly i'd go witht hat.

that is definitely enough to power a tiny web server + FTP.

I have a little P4 3.2 1gig of ram and 3 HD's (2 terabytes + 1 80gig boot) on a machine at home...integrated video + a gig NIC card....all in a shuttle box. costs 5$ a month in power being on 24/7.

it hosts a small domain for me + TF2 server-CS 1.6 server + ventrilo.

i'd go power saving for sure .

Try This MSI Wind. Buy a 2GB DDR So-Dimm for $15-25, and you are good. It's an impressive little system imho.

I was building a system for very similar functionality. I am planning on going with the MSI Wind. Seems like the best deal going.

I don't mean to complicate your life (okay, yeah, I probably do ) but this looks like an excellent opportunity for VMware Workstation with a dose of ESXi. I imagine they will hook you up with the 50% discount.

I'd say an X2 4850e would work 'just dandy' - maybe even a PhII 720 if you want to go wild.
