Peacoats are WORTHLESS compared to the MODERN puffy jackets.

Puffy just works...

peacoats might make some people look trim etc etc,, but they are not NEARLY as warm, simply because they do not have the "large volume of insulation SPACE vs puffy jackets.

Get with science...

I don't think I look too great in peacoats, so I got one of these about two years ago. Warm and looks good (gotten a few compliments). Got it on sale for about $40.

In my 9 years of the Navy, I think only once was I ever able to wear mine. On gate guard duty while ported in some shitty Italian town and I just as soon would have preferred coveralls & my utility jacket.
For real cold (Iceland) they issue parkas.

Having said that, mine is definitely much thicker and warmer than anything I've ever seen a civilian wear. I dont think the public market even has one as heavy as they gave us.

I was skeptical of pea coats at first, thought they looked pretty lame.

My tastes changed and I own one now. I think I look really good in it. If you're ready to start dressing like a grown-up, go for it.

I was the exact same up until 3 weeks ago. I always thought they looked too preppy, kinda a bit too "fancy man". Then I saw some metrosexual people in the subway wearing them, and liked it. Then 3 days after 3 weeks ago, I bought one at Banana Republic on sale. Looks gorgeous.

Go to a local BR, they may have some on clearance. My local BRs have been having major winter clothes sales for the past 3 weeks, so there may be slim pickings.

Black is a staple, but grey is gorgeous. I got a black one, will probably add a grey one to my wardrobe next year. The BR one is no longer 100% wool, probably cost cutting. It's still majority wool, and looks fine. Otherwise, check out Jcrew.

They are in style. I have one, not from a navy surplus store though. Girls seem to like em
