Hey guys I was walking through the local br and a peacoat caught my eye. I've never owned one though. What do you guys think of them? This one says 100% cotton though so is that a bad thing versus wool necessarily? It's going to be $150 + tax...is that in the low mid or high end? Thanks guys.

I got a wool one a couple years ago and its excessively warm, only time I wear it is outside when it drops below say 30F and that's rare in Oregon.

Cotton will look and feel rubbish and won't be warm. Go to a navy surplus store and get a great peacoat for < $50.

I can't speak for the US fashion market, but here $150 would be low to mid range.

Wool coat/peacoat is a classic look. Very warm too. Not sure what a cotton one would look like though. I wear mine over a nice suit or button down shirt.

Lawl, That's not a peacoat. That's some fruity thing.

Poor student should check out an Army/Navy Surplus Store. Or check out the local Goodwill store too.

Check out JCPenny's. They are a bit more focussed on the full length coat than the peacoat, but they have the best selection of any regular store in that category. And their prices are pretty good too, especially if you go wool.

I wouldn't shop at Penny's for anything else, just they happen to do well in this category.

I have one (wife bought it for me), but every time I wear it my coworkers sing the "In the Navy" song by the village people.

I was skeptical of pea coats at first, thought they looked pretty lame.

My tastes changed and I own one now. I think I look really good in it. If you're ready to start dressing like a grown-up, go for it.

Only get a genuine US Navy Peacoat. They will last a lifetime or more. I have a couple from WWII that I got 2nd hand, and they are still top notch.

If you get a cheap Chinese knockoff from Kohls et. al., then be warned. Just feeling the fabric (wool) of these cheap ones is suspect. And I should add that a 2nd hand one will likely be far less $$ than a new knockoff.

Just my 2 cents
