Thoughts on Mazda 6?

Don't know much about cars, I just saw an ad in National Geographic. I must say the car looks Very sweet but is it a nice car? Some Qs:

1. Is Mazda japanese? any quick background on the company?
2. Mazda 6 is new, I take it? When was it released?
3. Is it a good car? How does this compre to other $20k sedans? (Altima, Accord, Camry, Jetta so on..)

Thank you.. If this car turns out to be nice, Altima's got a serious competition in my mind.

You might want to do search on 'Mazda' in here. There's been quite a few threads discussing this car - most of the reviews seem very positive.

Mazda is a Japanese company. Ford however owns a majority share of it.

The 6 is new for 03

I like it a lot, a friend of mine test drove one and he liked it more than the Jetta vr6

actually ford owns a controlling share, not a majority share.

6 hit dealers late last year, so it is new, and might have a couple bugs. but it is a completely clean-sheet design, and shares nothing with any ford.

its a bit bigger than the jetta. you can check edmunds and see what they think

I believe the V6 engine in it is a Ford engine.

Mazda-engineered 2.3-liter four-cylinder and the Ford-sourced 3.0-liter V6

nope, they're thinking about putting it in the mondeo

of course I have nothing to compare it with since that's the only care I've ever test driven, but from what I drove, it's pretty sweet. Love the styling. 4-Cylinder bottom of the line with added 17" wheels and a spoiler was $20,500 here in Minnesota. I'll wait till they have some incentives first before I buy one. Right now only thing they have is a $500 credit for recent college grads (good two years from graduation date).

The V6 is basically a ford duratec - I think mazda did some work with the pistons, other minor changes. Not that it matters - it's a solid engine.

I want this car. I'm going to work my ass off this summer because this car is my payoff. Drop 2 grand down, get a nice low monthly rate...yum. Too bad I'll be looking at the Mazdaspeed version by the end of the summer. 🙂

Mazdaspeed version?! Links please? 😀

I'm still saving up for a car too and this is one of the many in the running... things is... i don't wanna finance it so its gonna take awhile before i gather all the money up. 🙁

They're nice cars... from what I hear, power is semi-disappointing, but it's really nice looking, and sounds fun to drive for sure...

Yeh, the 3.0 in it is just a Mazda massaged Duratec.

Kinda like the difference between the 3.5L VQ that Nissan uses in the Altima and the 3.5L VQ they use in the the Infiniti's.

damnit i said a month ago that the 6 shared mondeo parts and people came in and told me no, it didn't, and now i repeat that same thing and people tell me i'm wrong again! :disgust:

Yeah, but who always drives their cars with the "pedal to the metal?"

I have the following vehicles:

'99 Taurus w/3.0 Duratec (200 H.P.) V6: Plenty of power. I could get a ticket in this vehicle without even thinking about it.
'02 Mllenia with the wimpy 170 H.P. V6: Plenty of power for my wife. Not nearly as much power as the Duratec. However, the Millenia is made much better.

If I had a choice, I'd still take the Millenia over the Mazda 6. I don't care about H.P. I do care about a quality ride and Mazda had enough years to perfect the Millenia to the point that we are very happy with the car. You can't tell me that a $21,000 Mazda 6 is going to be better than a $29,500 Mazda Millenia. Mazda had to cut corners somewhere to get the price point down there. However, I will be happy to admit that I only paid approx. $21K to drive the Millenia off the dealer's lot. 😉

i don't think anyone paid more than about $23 to drive a millenia off the lot so you can compare the $21,000 mazda 6 to the $21,000 millenia

Up until the past 6 months or so, people were paying quite a bit more than $23K to get a Millenia. My mother-in-law purchased hers 6 years ago, and paid very near MSRP on it -- kind of what we're currently seeing with the Mazda 6. The cars are under too much demand at the moment to get too much off the MSRP price. If I go to Edmunds and price out a Mazda 6 with the options my Millenia has on it (leather, moonroof, side air-bags, etc. - I get a TMV price of $25,841. The only benefit the Mazda 6 would give me is 50 more H.P. - and again, I don't live in an area where power matters much -- rush hours are limited to 30 - 35 M.P.H. The V-6 in my Millenia is quite a bit quieter than the Duratec in my Taurus, though.

*drool* if mazdaspeed does for the 6 what it did for the 5... w0w! a turbocharged, hooked up 6... 🙂 good platform to start modding from, hopefully... 🙂

But when the new Mazda 7 comes out, it will 0wn it

they'd better not call it a mazda 7... it'd better be an FF (as in FB, FC, FC) and an rx-7, like they kept it with the rx-8.... and no sh!t if the new 7 comes out, it'd spank the 6... i wanna see if they're gonna go 3 rotor n/a (don't know how they'd do the intake and exhaust ports on the middle rotor tho), a larger displacement 14C engine...? or a turbocharged renesis (from what i heard, this is not the path they're going) it'd also be more expensive tho, and would seat 2 as opposed to 4, and will be geared towards a different market...

I'm assuming you mean this thread?

Not sure how closely you paid attention to that thread, but JeffreyLebowski mentioned that it was a Ford-sourced engine and nobody refuted his claim. If he was wrong I would have been more than happy to correct him.😉
