Thoughts on Ipod touch?

I was looking into getting a 2nd gen touch. One of my friends has one and I really like the screen size compared to ipod video, layout, wifi, etc.

Any big problems or defects with it?

Well, it's well designed and works as a great entertainment device for music, games, and it works well for surfing the web with wifi... and I think it's argueably the best value in terms of what you get vs. what it costs. Movies, games, applications, email, internet and music... it's like a portable touchscreen laptop when there's a WiFi connection nearby...

...but if you are looking for the cons:

1. it's big for an MP3 player
2. it's expensive for an MP3 player
3. the battery is non-removeable - which means some day it will have to go back to Apple for replacement
4. it's capacity is small for an MP3 player - especially compared to HD-based players
5. it doesn't take removeable SD/CF memory cards
6. it will only sync movies and music to one computer
7. it sync best with iTunes - which is not very nice if you are on Linux.
8. in the past, major firmware upgrades have not been free.

Still, if you want a portable entertainment device and internet device that happens to play music, I think a Touch is hard to beat.

absolutely love it. just downloaded the digital copy of The Dark Knight on it... impressed! I just use it to surf the net, play games, and watch videos.

I really like mine. I just got the 16GB version and its already filled. The biggest thing I hate about it is the iTunes software. It's crashed on me already and if you have 1000's of photos stored on the PC in many sub folders that you want to only sync some, you can't select specific sub folders. It can only chose 1 sub folder from the main photo folder. So I had to create a specific ipod folder and store my "copy" of photos in there. A waste of hard drive space really. There is a new program called "CopyTrans Photo" that seems like a really nice photo manager for the iPhone/iTouch.

I've always had issues with Quicktime and iTunes in the past and have avoided it for years. All these years later and its still crappy software.

I haven't tried it yet but there are plenty of 3rd party apps to manage music files on the ipod's.

I use "Xilisoft Video Converter" to convert just about all video files to .MP4 iTouch/iPhone ready.

From a business perspective, I especially like the way the "Contacts" and "Calendar" syncs with my Outlook. During the day, I use this most often.

I love mine. It's great to be able to check email, browse the web, listen to radio anywhere on my college campus. As long as you have access to the wifi hot-spots, then it's worth it.

I would give my right leg for a 64 gig version, it has a few quirks here and there. But as far as MP3 players, if you want one that does video, and has the ultimate cool factor there's nothing else on the market.

I've had my 1st Gen since launch week and I still play with Coverflow all the time. It's one of the greatest things ever lol.

What I would love to see in a 3rd gen.

A2DP (possible)
DiVX support - err very doubtful.
more memory, 64... 128 gigs!!! 🙂

I love mine. I thought I was done with iPods after I sold my 4G, but then I got my touch with my MBP and holy sh!t that thing is lovely. I sometimes lie on my bed reading and when I'm curious I whip my iPod out and just look something up quickly on Wiki. No need to walk to my laptop at my desk. The othertime we had a dinnertime conversation about GPSes and I simply looked up some stuff on the Touch at the table. Convenient.

It's pretty much a PDA. Who the hell needs those things nowadays? The iPod is damn powerful. Kinda wish I had the iPhone, but no way am I selling my Nokia N82 and downgrading.

I wouldn't like it because the majority of the time I'm using my MP3 player, its when its not convenient to look at it (driving/running/gym) - so I need actual buttons.

You can pause songs and skip forward on songs by pressing a button on the headset - if you have the right headset (it comes with iPhones... not sure about iPod Touch's) and you can change the volume using the volume buttons - again, at least on an iPhone. So when I'm using it as an MP3 player, I never have to touch the screen unless I want a particular artist or song - but you'd have to look at the screen to do this on a regular MP3 player too.

@pm- thanks for the list, nothing there is really a change on me since I have a video ipod. I only have 20gb of music and switching movies now and then isn't a big deal, so 32gb will work fine.

@docdoo- Yea, ipods are great and itunes is kind of shitty. I don't put pictures on my ipod so no big deal. I use "Videora," another free converter to convert dvd to .mp4.

Time to go buy one . (=

I have "good" headphones, that unfortunately do not have that option.
