Thoughts on censorship in these forums

I don't see what the point of having censorship is because if someone wants to say something that is in the filter, there are obvious ways of getting around it. For example, if I say "sh|t" everyone knows what I am really saying anyways, so why not just take the filters off. Obviously no one gets offended by this to the point that they are whining and complaining to the mods about it.

Out of all the forums I go to, this is the only one that actually does this.

I like the fact that I can come here, and not have to see the F word in every other sentence. If you cannot communicate on a BBS without cursing like a drunken sailor, then you have a problem. ;)

I agree, we should be able to say whatever we darned well please. Afterall, we're paying good money for this service. Oh, wait a minute, that's right! Guess not. Why not lighten up. Anand can run his site however he wants, it's his money and we're on his time. The mods just do their jobs.

Basically the response youa re gonna get is this.

This is a private forum. If you wish to participate you can follow the rules. IF not leave.

This has been brought up before but things like this won't change. Besides sh1t still isn't the reall thing. IT does carry similar connotations but then again when things are bleeped on tv often what is being said is still understood as well. :)

I agree with GF. I like the way the boards are moderated. Otherwise, there would be chaos.

OK you people are obviously not getting what im trying to say. I am saying that if i want to say something I will say it, so its not like it even matters if the filter is on.

Go ahead. Make my day.

No, you don't get it. Even if you do defeat the filters, the mods will edit it out and you will go on vacation.

No YOU dont get it. Im not talking about the trick around the filters "which i do know", im talking about replacing letters. Here is an example:

"I luve you"

I am still saying what the word implies.

As GF said, it makes the post much easier to read when every other word isn't a cuss word. They really serve no purpose on a computer oriented forum (even in off topic), so why bother to use them?

Well I just think its pathetic, unless you are very angry about something, to stick a V in place of a U to get your point across. I mean, it only makes you look uneducated. And I am by no means a prude, I can swear with the best of them. But I do not feel the need to bring that here, and I can control what I type alot better than what comes out of my mouth when I am angry. And that is just my two cents.

ARRRR mateeeyyy, I've been on dis boat a long time, arrrrr, I'm not gay, but your ass is gyyyaaarrr looking might arrrr fine...

Siva, if you are referring to my butt, why would you have to clarify that you are not gay? Unless my secret has gotten out..... :Q

This topic has been discussed before if I recall correctly. It would require quite a bit of moderation if the filters has to block every possible variation of a bad word. The mods allow the replacement of letters when they deem appropriate. The rules are clearly stated as far as inappropriate language. Users are expected to self-moderate.

also don't know why words like e-bay are not allowed...
i know they don't want this turning into an auction house, or people to refer to their posted items on e-bay...
but e-bay comes up so often, and most of the time, it's being used only as a reference.
