It's supposed to. They're releasing about 3-4 socket A models and 1 socket 754 in August. And then the socket 939 ones are supposed to follow next year.

Socket A Sempron won't be any better than the XP line, so I wouldn't wait on it. It will have half the cache of a barton. If it's cheap, it will be a good buy, but I think the socket 754 Semprons are where the sweet spot will be.

dont spread such disinformation. sempron isn't all that bad compared to a64, 1/4 of the cache size doesnt have that much of an affect on regular apps like games or video editing.

rather go and check this out:

http://www.tweakers.net/nieuws/33100?t=1088594925&

and last but not least, you should compare the price/perf. ratio

He SAID the SocketA chips were not going to be any better BUT the socket 754 are going to ge a good deal. Then you disagree and link to a socket 754 test setup.

I think you do not know what you are talking about ? ;)

I think no one knoes what they are talking about till we see some socket A benches. Obiously the socket 754 sempron is sweet, basically dead even mhz-mhz with the newcastle and will be the chip to have for those who understand value. Just wait till August when they are relased.

I doubt the Socket A Semprons will be much different at all from Current Socket A offerings. I wouldn't even be surprised if they were re-labeled XPs or something.

But at this point everything is speculation

The integrated memory on the cpu (and other architectual core improvements) will more than make up for the lowered L2 Cache in my opinion (It doesn't look like AMD's need lots of cache i.e. the 1meg L2 cache vs the 512L2 cache performance difference on the AMD 64's (I know different processor but still 5-7 % difference is not a lot)and I bet the Sempron's will be faster than equivalent XP's at equal clock frequencies. Just my guess. I saw a benchmark (ableit preliminary) of the Sempron 2800+ and the AMD 64 2800+ and it was pretty close with 64 edging it out barely.

Any processor that ends in the name of "ron" just plain sucks. Bet the Sempron will not change that.

The Duron wasn't all that bad.

Based on the ratings released by the inquirer (I think a 2800+ socket-a sempron was the fastest) I'm guessing that they're just 256kb (cache) Athlon XP's, most likely running somewhere between 2000-2200mhz. I can't see them being anything special. I hope they continue to produce the barton.

its the next generation duron. It wont be good until the 64 bit chips are mainstream and people want an alternative.

The socket 754 and 939 Semprons are going to rock if AMD retails them at current AXP prices. :p

I just wondered peoples thoughts on socket a availability. Seem to be a lot of negative discussion about when I searched around.

Availability? Athlon XP components are among the easiest things to find out there. :)
