Except for that pesky poisoning the population with extreme pollution, which includes degrading soil with toxins that will be around for many decades, bit.

Yes, and the sad thing about that is the rich who polluted the commons are spending money on expensive European prestige. Like, dude who owns Foxconn also bought a $30 million castle in Europe. His workers make $2.50 an hour.

Thank goodness we have the EPA to prevent such from happening again. And thank goodness no one wants to dismantle it because business has proven time and again it cannot and will not regulate itself.....

Oh, wait......

Kinda like us not too long ago, huh?
Not even close, really.

Yes, the US could have done better but:

a) People didn't know as much about things like lead toxicity as they do now.

b) Overpopulation was not an issue in the US.

c) The level of pollution isn't even close, except for water pollution, as with the Cuyahoga and Ohio rivers, and some cases of heavy metal pollution.

Yes, we have arsenic-tainted soil (which is why people and pets shouldn't eat brown rice farmed in America unless it's raised in California) but the level of soil problems alone pales in comparison with China's soil problems. People look at the extremely toxic air but forget about the soil and water.

The Chinese government decided that all the knowledge that has been gained doesn't matter because it's better to exploit people.

The GOP gutting the EPA is the biggest worry of mine for this administration. Things like lead and arsenic taint soils for many decades, even more than a century. They are very persistent. Our biggest problem with arsenic in soil is from the use of arsenic/lead combo pesticides way back prior to DDT. Both are still a big problem in soil that was exposed. The arsenic-lead cocktail was so toxic that it would burn away all the grass around trees in orchards when it was sprayed.

Knowing all that, then the US should be leading the way, right?

Wrong. Not with Repubs in charge.

Pollution in china is largely a byproduct of severe self-interested corruption, the perfect illustration of the tragedy of the commons and result of capitalist reform without the requisite legal countermeasure framework. It's not as if they're too goddamn stupid to regulate polluters.

China is only interested in GDP. It is not corruption or stupidity per se.

No, as a matter of first principles, CCP officials (ie the deciders) are largely self-interested in enriching themselves. Growth is just a way of facilitating that by remaining in power.

EPA Superfund sites as of Nov. 2013...soil/groundwater contamination, btw. (Air pollution does not count.) Red dots are active sites, green are cleaned.

Leading the way? You mean by overthrowing the Chinese government? Because otherwise your post is just tu quoque fallacy and a restatement of the argument I just successfully rebutted.

You successfully rebutted nothing except to give your opinion.

The EPA's Superfund NPL, National Priority List, has currently (as of Nov. 2016), 1337 sites identified as soil/groundwater contaminated. (157 Federal sites, 1180 "private" or non-govt. sites.)

There have been 392 sites cleaned and removed from the EPA's NPL list. There are another 53 proposed sites to be added...3 govt. sites, 50 non-govt.

https://www.epa.gov/superfund/superfund-national-priorities-list-npl

BTW....there aren't many on there just for lead or arsenic or DDT contamination. And remember, these are just Superfund sites, the worst of the worst. The contamination's got to be pretty damned bad to be included on the Superfund list.

You didn't read what I wrote, then. Some of the things I wrote are not opinions. They're facts.

One of them, for instance, is that the USA's big pollution issues were solved — well before China's arose to the current crisis levels. Time passes in a linear manner and people are capable of learning from others who made mistakes before they did and corrected them.

But, please feel free to ignore what I wrote if it makes you happy.

Okay. So this puts a rest to the absurd "The US is as bad as China" nonsense.

If this isn't enough, take a look at what percentage of total soil the Chinese government already admitted is extremely polluted. Cadmium, hexavalent chromium, arsenic, mercury, lead, and the like are very persistent in soil.

The US has some tainted soil from arsenic/lead pesticides used prior to DDT (much worse than DDT except for birds) but it also has California, a place where soil is generally not polluted — as a major farming zone.
