Thoughts on 19" CRTs?

Okay, so I am getting $145 back from taxes (its not much, but I am a freshman in college and I also didn't work long at the moment), and I have quite a bit in savings (not more than $500 though..and only $80 in checking). I am going to take out cash in the hopes of getting a good 19" Flat-Screen CRT. I am hoping to keep it under $230 as well. I know I could withdraw quite a bit from my savings and get one higher than that, as i'm sure some would suggest, but I am in college as I said and withdrawing more to get something higher than my limit of $230 is a very very bad thing right now.

That aside, what do you people suggest? I heard on here that the KDS XF-9E was good but i've seen it disappear from several places I enjoy (like Newegg) so I gotta search for it again but I am open to others as well. Should I stick with the XF-9E? The Samsung 955DF on Newegg is now $205.00 with Free FedEx saver shipping, and from what I hear on these forums I should STRONGLY consider that CRT. However I have heard it isn't truly flat as well. What are your thoughts of this? Thanks for everything guys :D!

Well! Looks like I have my choice! For those that have the monitor, though: What is the refresh rate at 1280x1024 and how is the non-flickering? I am really scrutinizing it, because my eyes are being hurt by this flickering monitor. I am leaning towards the Samsung 955DF because I know that many people enjoy it, so it MUST be good.

Yeah Samsung is solid. PCWorld rates the Samsung SyncMaster 957mb #1 in their Top 10 19" CRTs of the year. And I know your Samsung 955DF is a very good one as well. :)

But if you want top of the line and are willing to spend some more dough, the Sony G420s ($385 shipped @newegg) is where it's at. :Q

I don't like any of the Samsung DFs, but then again I'm used to Sonys. If your budget is that limited, I was fairly impressed with the Viewsonic G90F.

the 955DF is terrible! They're not TRUE flat screens.. I owned one - they simulated FS with a stupid plastic shield thingie.. Get an NF line or do like i did - get a refurb sony FD trinitron (sold my dad my 955DF for $50 and got a 21" sony E500 for $175 shipped)!

Yeah, you can see how it's round behind the screen. It drove me nuts. And the colors were awful too.

Again, I can't stress enough how terrible the Samsung 955DF monitor is.. Read Cnet's review on the monitor.. It's a truly budget, low end monitor... I'm not an anti-samsung/pro-sony snob.. The NF line of samsung monitors are superb! I honestly got headaches from my samsung (it flickers even at high refresh rates) and am SOOO glad that I spend the $175 on this sony..

Yeah, like i said, i had that monitor... and i'm glad i spent more money and got some better ones. For $200 though, i suppose it's decent... just don't expect it to rival any high end ones. And i don't know how they do their dot pitch measurement, but it's absurd.

thats not quite a bit;) be careful!

Yes it is. I have friends in college who don't have $500 in checking anymore. This is $500, down from $3500 before the first semester this year. They have maybe...$200 left in savings. I know my limits as well, I am very good with money and I am not about to go buy a $385 Sony monitor either so don't worry about me :D

I just looked at the 955DF in a store tonight before I saw these posts and I could see the roundness for myself. I don't know who told me it was awesome before I posted these, but that is definitely not cool. I have heard nothing but good things from people about this KDS XF-9E that I was originally going to get and it sounds like it is pretty good for the money but i'm still going to look around.

I own the NEC Multisync FE991SB. Seem's like a high quality monitor to me. It is truly flat and the colors and such look nice. I'd definately reccomend it, though I got mine for $225. Plus it uses a diamondtron tube, which is basically trinitron.

I will look into that monitor. If it is like trinitron then I will check it out. I have seen trinitrons in places and someone said the grey lines would bug me but I can't see them on those monitors...and i'm looking for the BEST monitor for the money that won't flicker/shake either. If I have to go out and get a 17" instead then so be it...but I know there are good 19inchers for $240 or under. $225 is perfectly fine...I am willing to go to $240 if the monitor is for sure worth it.

I was thinking of asking how those Cornerstones are...AnandTech favors them, don't they?

I like mine, unfortunately they don't make it anymore. p1460 is what I have. Great color, convergence, and clarity.

I think I will choose the FE991SB. I found it is $244 on Newegg w/ free shipping, and does anyone give it a bad review? I have yet to find one :) and someone told me the convergence is good on it as well. I know I can't go wrong with that choice.

Good choice, I'm sure you'll be happy with it. Reasonable price too.
