Hi all, I think I've answered my own question but as always, AT community feedback is always important! I want to move to win 7 64 bit as cheap as possible so I'm just plan on upgrading my old HD...uses are games and web...just wondering if upgrading more pieces would be that beneficial???

My current config is:
Biostar 965PT
Core Duo E6300
GTX 260 (1gb)
4gb DDR2 ram
plus assorted other stuff

For the upgrade I just plan to buy a new WB Caviar black 750GB HD over my old WD 250GB drive...would more memory be beneficial? new mobo and works???

Sure it would be. New stuff is always better.
But that has nothing to do with using Win7.
It will run fine (I'd venture to say very fine) on your system, even W/O a new HD.

My current sys seems to run all current games fine, any new gen games on the horizon my righ might have issues with? Any advantage to upping the ram to 6gb?

Well your specs should be more than fine for Windows 7, I run it on a much less capable machine... single core, 2gb ram, x1800xt. It works smoothly and quickly for normal tasks, like web browsing, writing, etc. I have all the special aero FX enabled too. No problems. I did, however, take a slight hit when playing games. Part of it is probably due to drivers (my video card is now legacy, for instance, and doesn't get frequent driver updates), and part of it is probably just the fact I have an old system.

You have a pretty decent machine and I doubt you (or anyone with a moderate desktop made in the last year) would notice the performance hit. I also doubt you'll see any immediate/obvious benefit from adding another 2gb of ram. Even with 50% of your memory and a single core I can alt tab Source games and stuff just as well, if not better than I could in XP.

As for new games on the horizon... I doubt we will see anything more demanding than Crysis, Far Cry 2, or GTA4 for awhile, since the consoles won't be updating for another couple years apparently. Modern Warfare 2 shouldn't be very demanding, neither is L4D2; Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 won't be very resource hungry either.

Given Win 7 per-se you do not need any upgrade if you are happy with what you have Now.

In the computer's world there is always new things coming out and there is No "Future Proof". So a smart move is always to upgrade when technically it is need it for a specific purpose.

Get Win 7 install and see for yourself. Win 7 gives you three ReArms before you must Activate. So you have 90 days to makeup your mind about serious upgrade if you want to avoid activation, and reactivation because of Hardware.

And if you do need to upgrade after Activation call Microsoft, explain and they would reactivate.

How-to ReArm. Open an Admin Command prompt type slmgr /rearm

Wait few second until a rearmed window comes on, and reboot.

The rig will run Win7 fine as is. New hard drive will speed things up slightly (and more space to work with), but the only thing I would upgrade is on the machine is a quad.

What kind of games do you plan on playing?
Other than that I would say Win 7 is amazingly better than vista and can be run fine with your current setup. Just keep in mind that if you want a good gaming rig I would recommend some upgrades.

Thanks for feedback everyone! As far as games, I play them all, from FPS to RTS...I definitely need a new HD as I'm down to 25gb left on my 250...also, thanks for the quad core suggestion, they seem pretty cheap looking at the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5GHz

A good hard drive can be used in the future for new system too

However given every thing mentioned, the Quad is a waste of money.

IMO the Black drives are a great option if you can't afford a SSD.

But I think there's a few Hard drives out there that are around the same performance if not better now.. Samsung F3, Seagate's 12 series. I'd check some buyer's guides before deciding on a HD.

Also Kingston has a 'Boot Drive' SSD now, for around $100. The V-Series only the 40GB model, if size doesn't matter. (170MB/s Read, 40MB/s Write)
