Biking in the city - hitting the 20mph, great weather, awesomeness abound.

I am passing a jogger, on his left, and just as I am passing, he decides to just turn left sharply without even looking. I swerve around him and he says "Sorry" and then backs immediately to the right where he almost crashes into another two bikers.

I know, I know I should have mailed him a registered notice 2 weeks in advance and submitted a request to pass to the Ministry Of Jogging Affairs that I would be passing him on the left. But, he had headphones on and his left turn was sharp, not a gradual drift to the left. And, again, he never looked over his shoulder. I always look over my shoulder when I want to turn - be it walking, biking anywhere.

This isn't the 1st time. I've had joggers stop and turn on a dime without looking. They rarely look before switching lanes or direction. Also, I was once on a biking trip in the Dakotas and a came across a jogger who was covered in bee stings. Turns out, he ignored the detour and some guy that was yelling at him. Stung jogger didn't have any headphones on though.

So, is this "The Zone" these joggers get into? Where they stop thinking and just act on a whim?

Shout next time, "PASSING ON YOUR LEFT". If he has headphones, jump off your bike and kick his ass. Runners shouldn't run with headphones unless on a track.

On a side note, he shouldn't even be running on that side of the street unless there was some obvious reason for him to be on the right side of the street.

Most people find bikers to be the dickheads. Especially with that recent video. In all honesty, bikes aren't exactly loud - and perhaps he did need to make an immediate left, what is so wrong with changing the direction of walking?

I don't look behind me every time I turn unless I'm turning into a street with possible cars coming. Normally if I'm about to get in someones way I would have heard them coming (Running). A bike can be silent, hence it's import to have a horn on the bike to alert people walking.

He was in the bike lane.

Which I don't care - but, if you are jogging in the bike lane, you have to be alert.

Not even street - it was a bike lane.

The West Side in NYC has 2 lanes for bikes.

EDIT: where the lamp post is, to the right, THAT is the pedestrian section.

Even more so..the rule for pedo-types is to be walking on the left side of the street toward the traffic. You should have made a citizen's arrest.

Alright, nevermind, fuck him then. Toss him in the fire if he was in the wrong section.

No different than bikers expecting their own lane on a heavily congested traffic road.

I do hate people who jog on the road. Especially the ones who do it at dusk with no reflective clothing on. They do it because asphalt is "softer" than concrete. Which is true but I don't think it's that big a difference to a 150lb person in cushioned running shoes.

It makes more sense to run in the early, early morning anyway. Less traffic on the road, cooler conditions (these days anyway), and you don't have to worry about puking up dinner. I never even considered asphalt being softer than concrete. Proper form and shoes makes it a moot point.

I just ride super slow around walkers and joggers. They are too flighty by nature and think the world runs at their own speed. The worst is the ones who think they don't have to return to the right after passing walkers, that really gums up the work.

Biking/commuting in the city, I always either say on your left or ring the bell on my handlebar to let people know I'm coming, if I'm going to coming close to them. Too many thoughtless bikers to go along with thoughtless jogger, walkers and drivers.

A crossfit place opened up on this little side street I travel frequently. They claim half the road with their signs and markings for runners, forcing me into the oncoming lane around a sharp turn where I cannot see what is coming.

Good thing roads are public - not private property. I would mow their shit down.

You were moving too fast for a crowded area and the other bikers should not have passed on the right...ever.

That being said, quit being a whiney a**hole. People make mistakes. Accept it, deal with it and go about your day. I guarantee you that somewhere there is someone complaining about something stupid you did and you probably didn't even realize you did it.

It wasn't crowded.

The speed limit on bikes in NYC is 20mph. Dropped down from 25mph a few months back.

It was in a bike lane - next to it (separated by hedges) was the pedestrian area.

People do indeed make mistakes. Thoughtless people though don't make mistakes - they intentionally screw shit up. Like this jogger who decided to take over the bike lane and not check over his shoulder.

It's the WalMart mentality that pedestrians always have right of way no matter where they are :)

most people in general are oblivious of what is going on around them and selfish as shit, so this behavior is expected.

Actually, it's a matter of law. However, the old joke goes; what do you call a pedestrian who insists on the right of way? A statistic.

Here's the deal, fuck just about anyone except people on a sidewalk, walking who wear headphones.

I see bicyclists, runners, AND car operators wearing headphones and I can't understand it unless they have the pass-through sound feature like my Plantronics do. Even then, I don't wear those if I know I'm going to be on a street for any period of time.
