I need some help for my uncle the budget is $1000 Canadian but I'm trying to make it less than that..this is where I'm at I need some help on choosing the motherboard, cpu (instead of that athlon 2 should I go with the Phenom 2 955 for $127) and vid card also a nice sleek case don't need one with blue fans everywhere..there is a 500W antec earthwatts power supply with this antec case is that enough?

I do not know which to go with, the comp will be used for basics email, youtube, internet browsing but he wants to run that SETI@home stuff now I know nothing about it but from the little I've read seems the nvidia gpus work with most of the seti stuff...this computer will most likely not be upgraded in the future so he wants components that will last..below is what I currently have he needs it asap so I'm just waiting to see if ncix has any good deals this afternoon then will most likely buy the parts help would be appreciated my head is hurting trying to read up on more stuff lol

also why the hell are all the amd boards MATX i'm seeing different chips 770,785,790,870,880,890 but only the expensive boards are full ATX

seems to be minimizing the image unless you click it

Please read the forum and the many recommendations made here. mnewsham's "daily build" thread would be an excellent place to start.

I just saw the daily build thread but it doesn't answer any questions concerning the seti@home stuff and it's most likely never gonna be overclocked plus the lack of l3 cache on the 640 vs the black edition 955 if it's worth switching

If it's the PSU that I think it is, it has 22A on each of its 12V rails, so it should handle your build (and the card) quite nicely.

Does he really need SATA3 hard drive? It might help with load level times, but you didn't say if he's a gamer. You could save almost $20 bucks here and double his storage with a WD20EARS.

Just as a word of warning, do not count on the MSI rebate.

not a gamer at all but the price of the 1tb is $69 5 year warranty and I understand its faster than the green drive and they will not even come close to using any of that space not even a little lmao

and checked the PSU says 17A on each of the 12V rails

lame never had a rebate for msi I'm hoping later on in the ncix sale they have a card for cheap

The Antec Sonata comes with the Basiq PSU, which is a decent unit. Should be fine.

SATAIII doesn't make the WD Black a faster HDD, but it is faster than the WD20EARS anyways. I don't believe you have much alternatives, like a Samsung F3, in Canada anyways.

I've only had one MSI rebate. It took a long time, but I did get the check in the mail.

^thanks for the info man, what are the thoughts on the cpu though should I switch or keep it as it or maybe even go to the x6 1095T?

and I just found this maybe some other people can use the info

760G - Budget, majority if not all are µATX, have integrated Radeon HD 3000 graphics, one PCI-e 16x lane.

770 - Budget, majority ATX IIRC, should have only have one PCI-e lane. Some come with two PCI-e lanes but the second one operates at 4x bandwidth, possibly resulting in bottlenecking in CrossFireX for some cards. More modern boards support SATA III and USB 3.0.

785G - Relatively budget, welll - suited for HTPC thus majority are µATX IIRC, comes with Radeon HD 4200 graphics, one PCI-e 16x lane, some has an extra PCI-e 16x lane which works at 4x like the 770 chipset.

790X - Higher end, ATX form factor supports 8x/8x CrossFireX. More modern boards support SATA III and USB 3.0.

790GX - Higher end, ATX form factor, supports 8x/8x CrossFireX, has integrated Radeon HD 3300 graphics.

790FX - Very high end, supports 16x/16x, 16x/8x/8x, 8x/8x/8x/8x CrossFireX, ATX motherboards.

870 - Budget, majority ATX IIRC, one 16x PCI-e lane, native SATA III support, some with USB 3.0.

880G - Relatively budget, mainly µATX, one 16x PCI-e lane, some come with a second at 4x, same situation with 770 chipset, native SATA III support, some with USB 3.0, has integrated Radeon HD 4250 graphics.

890GX - Higher end, ATX form factor, supports 8x/8x CrossFireX, comes with integrated Radeon HD 4290 graphics, native SATA III support, some with USB 3.0.

890FX - Highest end for AMD at the moment, all ATX form factor, supports 16x/16x, 16x/8x/8x, 8x/8x/8x/8x CrossFireX. Native SATA III support, some with USB 3.0.

What you've listed looks fine. Seti@home does support CUDA, so you'll definitely want an Nvidia GPU.

I wouldn't bother upgrading the CPU to an X6 because the only thing that that would do for the build is raise the cost and marginally increase your uncle's seti@home points per day. I say marginally because the GPU will be contributing the lion's share of the total points.
