Thought it was a software error, but...

Someone left a computer with me to "format the thing and reinstall" for them. I thought this would be a quick job, so I put it off for awhile. Every time I leave the Setup CD formatting, I return to find a BSoD message. It is either happening at the end of the NTFS format, or just after it completes (when file-copy process begins).

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

-removed all non-required hardware
-burned a new Setup CD from my image file
-re-seated memory and IDE cables

...nothing worked

...restarted (again) and tried to install without formatting. Now the BSoD says that "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" is responsible for the crash.

Hmm, this sounds weird. Does the bios let you bump up voltages a bit? Does running through Memtest86 yield anything interesting?

It's a Compaq Presario 5310US...very restricted BIOS settings

Is "Memtest86" a command for the recovery console?

Memtest86 is a free downloadable prog that you can install and boot from a floppy. (search Google) This program will scan for any possible memory errors. It's pretty accurate in identifying if memory is a/the faulty component in a computer.
