I've had 4 in the past 3 years. And yes, the pain is unimaginable. My drug of choice is Vicodin - especially through an IV. In fact on one visit to the ER, they made me stay the night because of the amount of Vicodin they had given me. The Dr. wanted to be sure that I didn't quit breathing in my sleep.
At first my Dr. was stumped for a cause because I have no family history and my tests were negative. It wasn't until my third stone that my Dr. figured out what was causing my stones. If I remember correctly, my stones are a result of problems with metabolizing uric acid or some such. My Dr. put me on a restricted purine diet and allopurinal. The diet sucks - everything that I used to eat I can't now. Only the memory of the pain keeps me on the diet. No stones since I started the diet and allopurinal. I also drink lots and lots of water.
The only thing that seemed to help with the pain was to run a very hot - and I mean HOT - bath and soak.
One thing that I have noticed about myself since I started getting stones is that I pee alot.
I probably go more than my wife did when she was pregnant with either of our kids.
I feel for ya. Sounds like your situation is worse than mine. Good luck.
