i'm paying for the electricity (i do turn off monitors, printers, & other peripherals).

i leave it on to avoid the thermal contraction/expansion of components when turning the thing off/on.

Dude you are so right, Seti is stupid so everyone in the world needs to stop because you said so. Thank you so much for pointing that out to me. Just think, I was close to having yet another PC stupidly run Seti for me, that would have been 10 PC's running 24/7 crunching Seti. That would be close to like 45-50 WU's a day which would really increase my stats and help the TeAm hold off BBR and...........WAIT what they hell am I am thinking? Must keep all those power hungry systems running 24/7 (screw sleep mode) and keep them all crunching MORE MORE MORE baby!!! HAHA you can't stop me! I will use as much PC power as I can, in fact, just because I truly dislike people like you..... I will put Seti on any PC I can get my stupid little hands on!

SETI does more than just search for ETs, it also searches for blackholes and other stuff that is valuable scientific data.

Personally I run United Devices doing the distributed cancer research. I think that's well worth the electricity cost.

Unless you are doing something critical that NEEDS your computer to be on, please turn it off.
You are just wasting electricity.

Some reasons for which people leave the comp on which I think are really dumb(and i have seen all these reasons):
-Running SETI - stupid - believe me you are not going to find anything
-Running RC5 - stupid - who cares about that key
-Achieving greatest uptime - its a damn PC for gods sake - personal computer - not a freaking server.
-Being online on AIM for the longest time - this is THE dumbest reason for leaving computer on - I mean there must be something seriously wrong with you if this is what gives your ego a boost.
-I dont pay for electricity, so who cares - this is pretty dumb too

I know I will get flamed for RC5/SETI but do you seriously think they are doing anything???
I bet 75% of the people running SETI dont even know what the heck it does. Dont just tell me it does fourier analysis.

Anyway, flame on if you want to...

johnjbruin It's obvious that you have no USEFUL reason to TURN ON your computer so KEEP YOUR COMPUTER OFF!. Don't EVER turn it on! Asking to be flamed is DEFINITELY a WASTE of electricity. Do something useful with your life, plant a tree!

I don't leave my PC @ home on, but we do leave all our PCs at work on. Why? United Devices Cancer Research client.

Good enough reason? I think so.

I leave mine on 24/7 simply to leave AIM running. I just put up away messages when, I sleep or go to work.

And I am sure that you think posting here is critical. Why don't you turn yours off and spare us all?

Computers are one of Man's greatest built tool, just as important as the wheel and Iron. Computers change lives every nanosecond and have the potential for saving lives every nanosecond, can you say that about your car sitting at red light stuck in traffic?
Now turn off your machine and diss Distributing Computing.

We are of course a free society and should you so choose to not contribute that is your right and choice.

John there are times surely when your computer is on and its not using all its resources? Just think - If you had a DC program in there mopping up all those wasted cycles (and electricity) you could be using the resource more efficiently and responsibly.

Ask your conscience - "Should I be allowing all this electricity to go to waste whilst I'm opening inane topics at AT?"

So from principles completely in line with your opening stance I would ask you to do something for your fellows and get a DC program on that computer! Come over to the DC forum where the many eager clear thinking individuals that form the mighty Team Anandtech will assist you to pick out a project worthy of your kilowatts. After all you're paying for the resource, you're consuming the resource - get some value from the resource and do your bit!

Sure, you don't have to leave it on all the time. Most computers that run DC projects only do so when in screensaver mode and most of those are only on during working hours.

Think of the power for good you can be John!

Its says I pay 26c per kwh on my electric bill. Which is why the computer is on a minimal period of time.
