It was stated in the terms and conditions of the Step-Up program. And no, you don't pay extra for the EVGA cards, at least, not that that I know of. The Step-Up program is part of their standard warranty, hence the reason a lot of people end up buying them.

Probably redundant question but will eVGA let you step up from a GTS to a GTX in the 90 days? I would like to save the cash and go with the GTS but it is quite a step down perf. wise from the GTX. I would like to be able to step up to the GTX if I find myself not really happy with the GTS performance.
