Those of you with 1996 Chevy Blazers...

When I fill up, I usually end up putting in about 15 or 16 gallons (I think the thing is a 19 gallon tank)

I always hit the trip when I fill up, and lately I've been getting about 140 miles for half a tank and when I fill up (usually a little under 3/4ths full) I've got about 240 miles...

what do you guys normally get?

What could be causing such crappy gas mileage?

(I've changed air filter, will be changing spark plugs this week... transmission fluid is fine and engine and everything works well)

This is on a vehicle with 155,700 miles on it

Any suggestions?

Yeah, but if it was the oxygen sensor, wouldn't the "service engine soon" light be on?

No, it could be reading off but not out of range to throw a code.

I drive a 2000 Jimmy 4x4 for work. Auto w/ the 4.3L. Should be basically the same vehicle. I can get about 320 miles out of a tank (about 15-16 gallons) on strictly highway milage.

Mixed driving is about 260.

Ok, well then that isn't so far off... sometimes I get good gas mileage, just as of late it's been kind of crappy...

They may have swtiched to the winter blend of fuel in your area. The winter gas always seems to yield worse milage than normal.

Paulson, you're in Minnesota, aren't you?
I don't think they do winter blends in the midwest
did you fill up w/ E10?

My mother drives a 96 Blazer and reports mileages of around 15-18 mpg. It's a two-door, 6-cylinder, automatic, and she drives like a madwoman so take that as it is.

They do winter blends in Minnesota, as we always get crappy gas during the winter...

But I truly doubt they would have already switched to that, as it's only october and hasn't really been that cold.

could even be dirty fuel injectors.. sometimes they spray more than they should.
i do not know how to track that one down, it can be hard to figure out.

Well I'll see how things go after new spark plugs and if it's still being stupid, I'll take it somewhere and have the fuil injectors cleaned out.

Thanks for the replies guys

Some other things to check: tire pressure, wheel alignment. As far as fuel injectors go, you could try BG Products BK-44G. It's one of the best additives for cleaning injectors, but it run about $25.00 for the container. However, $25.00 is still way less than a shop would charge you to clean the injectors.

Tire pressure and wheel alignment are good, I just checked all 4 tires and I just had new tires put on about 3 or 4 months ago...

I'll have to try some more experimenting...

why dont you find out what your gas mileage is???

here is the right way to do it

1. when you fill up for your trip, fill it all the way to the rim, i mean when you pull out the nozzel you see gas sitting there and not gurgling back into the tank, it has to be FULL

2. Write down your milage or reset your trip counter

3. when you fill up again, fill it up to FULL again

4. now divide your trip milage into how many gallons you just pumped into your blazer and you will know exactly what your MPG is.

Your tank must be FULL on both fillups to get an accurate result.

What kind of speeds on the highway? I thought driving 65 instead of 55 would decrease your mileage by approximately 15%.

I just checked the mileage ratings for a 2WD 1996 Blazer. 17 MPG city / 22 MPG hwy.

Is yours a 4WD or 2WD? If 4WD, can you disable the 4WD?

Edit: Given the fact that your vehicle has 150,000 miles on it, the mileage might be part of the issue, too.

That is damn good for a Blazer with the 4.3. I had a '85 with the 2.8 and got about 14. I only get 22ish in my little Zuk.

Change your air filter and check O2 sensor. My air filter on my Zuk was sirty as hell when I changed it, and my milage went from 18ish to 22ish. Over 10% improvement for $10.

It's a 4.3L 4WD Blazer, but the damn thing isn't always in 4WD, it's normally in 2WD..

I usually drive 64-65...

Paulson, what do you expect with a Chevy 350 with two cylinders cut off the block in a vehicle that weighs close to five thousand pounds and has the aerodynamics of a brick sh!t house.

Roger, I just wanted to see what other people were getting...

From now on I think I'm going to be driving my mom's intrepid or my dad's car to school...
