And, if applicable, the fact that you could be making a lot more with the same amount of education (or even less)?

It makes me feel horrible and makes me want to kill myself. Oh woe is me!

(was that the response you were fishing for?)

I'm in a field in which I *could* be making a lot of money... but in general, the higher the salary, the less I'll enjoy the job. I'll probably eventually wind up with a crappy paying consulting job, that I absolutely love. And if that happens, no, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

You can live quite comfortably with a job that doesn't pay all that well. The key is proper family planning, and making financial plans/goals tht involve regular saving and investing.

Many people who have higher incomes who do not plan live less well off than those who have lower incomes but do have financial plans and who are willing to delay consumption.

I'd much rather have a high paying job that I hate, and be stuck in a situation where I'd rather kill myself than continue, than even consider a low paying job that I enjoy going to, even though I have little or no money at the end of it, because then I'd have no money and it would be shameful, and I should end myself.

Is that the other answer you wanted?

It's entirely possible for someone in a low-income situation to get rich. Heard of property investment? I know several people who have gone from $30 - $40,000 jobs to making millions in property. Hell I know a guy who made millions in Amway, who drives a Dodge Viper and owns a Ford Falcon EL GT, one of only a handful in New Zealand. Making good money goes beyond the job you go to every day.

On the other side of the coin, there are people like me. I really don't care about making oodles of money, as long as I am comfortable. I would rather make a real impact on the world than accumulate a huge bank balance.

Silly people. I wasn't "hoping" for any answer. I'm en route to a not-so-profitable career myself and have my doubts, which is why I was wondering.
