They do in fact work if mounted away from the area - they will attract and eliminate bogies with a resounding capacitive discharge report. Artifacts of larger insects (burning flesh smell) are usually not noticed when lanterns are 40 or more feet from the area of free play.
Now the bad news. While these do in fact eliminate tons of flying nocturnal insects, most of the eliminated ones are not the typical annoying pests which keep people either indoors or within the confines of a screened enclosure! Mosquitoes will not be eliminated by electronic insect lanterns!
So what do you get for your money? Basically a device that uses approximately 60W of electrical power, glows bilirubin (actinic) blue that can make objects fluoresce at considerable distance, and makes an annoying racket that can keep your neighbors up at night. Mosquitoes will still bite you on your patio. The wild birds will love you; the pile of insect fragments beneath the device will feed them well.
