They do in fact work if mounted away from the area - they will attract and eliminate bogies with a resounding capacitive discharge report. Artifacts of larger insects (burning flesh smell) are usually not noticed when lanterns are 40 or more feet from the area of free play.

Now the bad news. While these do in fact eliminate tons of flying nocturnal insects, most of the eliminated ones are not the typical annoying pests which keep people either indoors or within the confines of a screened enclosure! Mosquitoes will not be eliminated by electronic insect lanterns!

So what do you get for your money? Basically a device that uses approximately 60W of electrical power, glows bilirubin (actinic) blue that can make objects fluoresce at considerable distance, and makes an annoying racket that can keep your neighbors up at night. Mosquitoes will still bite you on your patio. The wild birds will love you; the pile of insect fragments beneath the device will feed them well.

I live a few miles away from some sort of factory that has big ones mounted every 100 yards around its perimeter.

You should hear those things (and watch the light show) on a warm summer night.

Bug Zappers are known to attract more bugs to the area than they kill.

A kilowatt CW UV laser would have some serious draw but could cause great harm to humans if they ventured too close. ;evil;

..I hung mine back side of the house and not only attracted bugs but a whole mess of batts showed up and started feasting on the moths and bugs before they had a chance to get to the light..bug lights are good for the batts.

It absorbed the shocks like a champ. Finally it landed on the screen and held on. You could see the outline of the insect surrounded by pure electricity. Its will to reach that UV light was unstoppable. It must have held on for about 20 seconds until it succumbed to the lethal electricity.

Even though the zapper was clearly not designed to take on an insect that big, this bug pushed the limit and fulfilled its destiny of being killed by a bug zapper.

I never learned its name but the memory will last forever- Giant Cicada, this bud's for you :beer:

We used to get Cicadas where I grew up, those things were the coolest bugs ever. They're just too big and lazy to care about anything. They're the insect equivalent of the giant fat guy who just says "ahh, fvck it" to anything involving effort.
