Hi All,
I must be missing something. I fail to see how this is a deal 66.00 for 2000+. You're able to get a 2500+ retail barton for 91.00 shipped. Please enlighten me

I guess its for the biggest of pennypinchers...

you save $30, mod it to kick in Barton-amounts of cache, then hopefully achieve the same overclock as a 2500+

actually if you think about it, is it possible that maybe if you DIDNT enable the extra 'hidden' cache that it would have a higher overclock potential than a 2500+ with all 512KB enabled?

I don't think so. It's not like the extra 256kb will add extra heat.

what i mean is, more transistors = harder overclocking/less tolerance to increased voltage/more delicate architecture ???

yay, i was somewhat right :)

yea, one of the initial criticisms of Bartons amongst bigger fans of Tbred was that Barton wouldnt do so well in overclocking because all those extra transistors would make it sensitive to voltage increases, theres more to get damaged/unstable

if the cache starts F'ing up when speed and voltage (and in turn, heat) starts getting cranked, then something is bound to go wrong.


But they seem to be doing excellent now (my week 24 2500+ is running 2300mhz @ 1.8v at 68c, thats not the greatest OC i know! but at least im safe up to 85c) and if youre on a STRICT budget or only have xx dollars to upgrade something in your PC you can go with a Thorton and have the increased satisfaction of finding a cheap little gold nugget!!!

That is debateable...

I have my Barton 2500 at 2.1ghz, air cooling, stock voltage, and temps never get above 30C.

I am still pushing it too...

your average 1700+ on the shelf today is hitting 2.3-2.4ghz with very little effort, that is enormous scalability given they are not boosted model numbers as a result of more cache. just raw speed.

anyways, nice overclock. 2.1ghz kinda low though, get it up more at least to a 400mhz bus.

I'm not even close to done. And I have the FSB running at 420 actually.... 210*10=2100

Well, from what I've seen, most 2500+ chips max out right around 2.2 Ghz. Meanwhile, the later 1700+ chips seem to get to 2.3-2.4 GHz on the same cooling.
