Thoroughbred - drop in upgrade?

Will the new AMD chips be socket-A compatible? Will we need a BIOS update, or should they work? I'd like to buy an NForce 415D motherboard, but I don't wanna have to buy another motherboard when 2200+ comes out.

I suspect that most motherboards will require a BIOS update to include the lower voltages. Some may support the proc out of the box. We'll have to wait and see...

I agree that most existing AMD motheroboards will require a BIOS update to accept the Thoro-chip, first because of the higher multiplier and second because of the voltage change.
But only time will tell. Why AMD does not release these new chips is beyond me. The Palomino 2100+ runs so hot that it is the end of that line. The next logical upgrade is to the Thoroughbred based chips at 2200+...but AMD has not announced what speeds will be released or even exactly when the release will occur. Nor are the prices known. I know the answer....the Thoroughbred will be so fast that AMD will create yet a new "speed" designation in order to beat Intel's 2.4 GHz chip....the new AMD chip will be called the "2200+++"

AMD has not announced what speeds will be released or even exactly when the release will occur.

2200+ comes out early to Mid-April.

Well, consider the source, but I just read on XBIT labs that the thoroughbred will not be out until MID June.
There will be an interim XP 2200+ however.

I'm interested in a hammer motherboard with USB 2.0, RAID, Serial ATA, legacy-free (I love the ABIT MAX!), and DDR 400 memory. You guys think that will be a possibility by the end of the year?

I'll wait for the i850E and the Northwood Bs. Hehe, the Thoroughbred will be a pretty sweet proc. Should carry AMD for a while.. The Clawhammer wont be all it's cracked out to be though. Nothing makes use of 64bits right now so there wont be any big performance boost...

Back to the original question about mobo compatibility. Remember the "KT7A - Athlon XP" deal? IIRC, version 1 of KT7A CANNOT work with the Palomino (no BIOS update, no nothing) but version 2 can after a BIOS update. However, this time the change is only a shrink-die.

To be on the safe side, I'll definitely wait till the last moment to get the mobo.

64-Bit is not ment for mainsteam computing but more for servers, this is were the big advantages will be. the Intel Itanium64bit wipes the floor with any currant server CPU including Xeon's, P4's.
