Thoroughbred cpus

After reading Anand's article on the Athlon XP 2100+, I was just wondering, is there any new news on how compatible the Thoroughbred cpus will be with the current motherboards/chipsets?

The A7N266-C new BIOS supports the thoroughbreds. I'm pretty sure the kt266a and the other chipsets should be able to support the t-bred.

I really wish they would make the Thoroughbred FSB run at 166mhz even if it meant not being compatible with older motherboards. I think AMD is sacrificing performance in order to make some people happy.

Will the T'Bred work with a KT133A board? Also, if it's supposed to run cooler than current Athlons, then I wonder if the current crop of HSFs that are rated up to XP2100 will also work with the lower end T'Breds.

Anyone?

seeing that the kt7a had troubles with the move to the XP i find it had to believe that the kt133a is likly to be compatible. a thought.

here's some commentary and quotes from overclockers.com on march 13 that draws some questions:

Quote of the Day "If your motherboard currently supports the Athlon XP processor then the highest you'll definitely be able to upgrade to will be the 2100+ that we're looking at today. Whether you'll be able to upgrade to the Thoroughbred core or not is still a bit foggy; the reason being that AMD themselves haven't finalized exactly what the Thoroughbred core will come equipped with."

Compare that to what AMD was apparently saying almost a year ago: "AMD actually told us that as long as motherboard manufacturers adhere to the guidelines they set forth, a motherboard purchased today would work with not only the Athlon 4 but also the Thoroughbred and Barton cores. This means that the Thoroughbred and Barton cores will both be on Socket-A Athlons as well."

If AMD wants to be taken seriously in the corporate market, they have to stop playing these games. Predictability is more important than a little more performance. Yes, Intel switches sockets at the drop of a hat and is hardly ideal, but at least you can find out a few months ahead of time whether your current purchase will get obsoleted real soon or not.

be scared, very scared. a poor upgrade path would destroy AMD, so hopefully it will have wide compatibility.... hopefully.
dew.

Thoroughbred?

boy AMD is really naming their CPU after horses.. Mustang and Thoroughbred.

Previously Thunderbird, Morgon, etc..

Where's Ford Thoroughbred by the way? 😉
