I like the idea of buying music online. I dislike the idea of having to pirate something that I already own because a company took their DRM servers down (which were an unnecessary cost in the first place).
 
Or you can just buy the CD for $10 and rip it yourself and not be a pirate AND keep the music forever.

I thought RIAA still said that was piracy actually, they just can't enforce that one yet.

I agree 100%. I love that I can purchase DRM Free music in FLAC format from BurningShed (A UK label started by Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree) for a lower price than the CD. That encourages me to purchase rather than pirate, since I would not have any restrictions on my usage compared to a pirated version.

The average person pays for their music or listens to the radio. Want to stop piracy? You can't, but you make purchasing and downloading DRM-free music as simple and easy as possible so the average person can purchase music. Amazon and iTunes(just need to go completely DRM-free) have pretty much done that. Record Labels are not making the big money because they aren't overcharging like they did in the past. Besides the big bucks come from doing tours. Have you not seen ticket prices lately? They could also make more money by having better talent. Good talent = better music = more money.

Even if they don't win, you still lose. You'll waste tons of time in legal battles and money in court fees. Even if you're awarded the legal fees (which doesn't often happen) you've still wasted a ton of your time.

Regardless, it's just as easy to convert DRM tracks into DRM-free tracks as it is to rip a CD. Either way, you're considered a pirate.
 
DRM is for suckers. although i've spent tons of money on music, movies and software (forget about the copy-protection hardware we're forced to pay for) it's not unusual for the pirated copy of a product to be superior to the legit one.

Maybe in whatever country you live in, but here in the US, it's fine. The RIAA may say it's illegal, but they can say a lot of things. On the other hand, distributing copies of those cds may well be illegal.

Of course, the disadvantage of buying those cds can be twofold: First, the cd may install a very unwelcome rootkit on your PC (thanks Sony!). Second, when was the last time you wanted every song on a cd?

Yeah the RIAA wants it to be illegal, but the courts haven't sided with them on that one. But, I usually do want all the tracks on the cds I buy, guess I'm weird 😛

My Tivo recorded a History Channel show on the history of prostitution, where they mentioned it. I found a few google hits on it. (I may not be quoting it exactly, and you definitely suck at teh google: link)

My guess is that the Catholic Church really doesn't want to emphasize the idea that he said this.

The author forgot the other condition that could render DRM useless - when the provider of the authorization servers simply decides to stop providing the service.

"Yes, you bought something from us under the assumption that it would work forever. Well, um, we have your money now, and you're not getting it back. Sucks to be you!"

 
Heh - I liked the alt text. I too spent HOURS trying to burn an audio CD from audible.com for my wife. I finally just told her to cancel her subscription and I was never dealing with that crap again.

Walmart.com has a custom CD store which I've used and enjoyed several times. Just pick only the tracks you want, and a custom CD comes to your house a few days later. I then just rip the CDs to MP3 - no DRM. The selection's pretty good, although there are of course going to be tracks you can't find, but overall, I've been pleased with the catalog.
