I'm not sure if you're trying to troll or be a braggart. Hopefully, though, you're capable of calculating that the lady "earns" more an hour for her planning and coupon clipping than you make in an hour. And, if you consider the amount of time an average wife with a family of 4 spends per week shopping, then her few hours of extra planning & coupon cutting probably doubles your hourly rate.

But, if you want, you're welcome to always pay MSRP for everything you purchase and go bragging to your coworkers about how much money you spent, rather than how much you saved.

For the report, she went to 2 stores, and saved $171. Even if she took 1 hour clipping coupons and 4 hours shopping, that's $34 an hour, tax free.

Knock out half of that just for getting stuff on sale with your store card and my time and aggravation isn't worth $17 an hour.

LOL @ those who like giving as much money as they can to fat corporations.

I'm not a coupon clipper, but I will comparison shop in my head (vs. scouring ads I'll just remember who usually has the best deal on what we need and where). If a coupon falls in my lap I'll use it though.

To quote a wise man (insert sarcasm on the wise part) J.D. Wentworth "IT'S YOUR MONEY!! USE IT WHEN YOU NEED IT!!!"

I'm so tired........I should sleep

OMG tell me your secrets! I always thought coupons were more hassle than they were worth. 30 cents there, 20 cents there, redeem 5 coupons and you've saved a whopping $1, which you could have easily saved by just buying the generic brand. I had no idea you could actually save so much.

The math is wrong. You've gotta subtract how much time someone would shop each week for a typical family of 4. I can't see it happening in less than 1 1/2 hours, so that's $171 saved for the extra 3 1/2 hours.

That's nearly $49 per hour. Far from that $17 an hour.

And, a store card certainly isn't going to knock the shopping bill down to $10 per week - it won't even come close. You'd have to stack coupons on top of the shopping card, etc.

She also only went to two stores to save the $171, where she would have normally gone to more. Therefore, you can assume she either spent less time then usual or saved less then usual (they mention $10 grocery store trips).

it's really not that hard, you just have to look at your local circulars every week.

1. find out your local grocery stores in the area. kroger/ralphs, albertsons, safeway, etc.
2. find out which stores double coupons. some stores even triple that don't exist here in southern california
3. look at the circular ad every week. find the good sales, i.e. Buy One Get One Free, or 2/4.00, etc. if cereal is BOGO free, that's a good deal. If it's 1.88 a box, that's a good deal.
4. get the sunday paper and cut out the coupons. i personally don't cut them all out - i only cut out the ones i KNOW i will use, and the ones for items that i would only purchase if they went on sale and combined with a coupon, would make for a good deal.
5. start shopping.

if you don't have time, you can sign up for the grocery game, where you pay for someone to do all the research for you. but with a month of regular scoping out of the ads for your local stores, you will start to recognize what's a good deal and what isn't. also, sometimes the stores have "unadvertised" sales, so if you have time to just wander the aisle, it could be beneficial to you. some aisles i never go down - i.e. pet food, alcohol, makeup and shampoo at the grocery store, so it's really only 10 aisles you have to cruise up and down at most.

I do all of the grocery shopping for my family of four, my wife bows down to me because I am a fairly cheap fuck and I really watch what I spend in the store. I usually spend 180-200.00 per trip to Wal-Mart. I usually shop every 16-20 days, so I probably spend about 65-80.00 per week on groceries, sans coupons. I take about 90 minutes to carefully shop for what I actually need versus what I really really want. Also I am a firm believer in store brand items. I am of the belief that Wal-MArt, in particular, uses major food companies to make their private label branded foods and dry goods. I know for a fact that my company (Schwans) makes their frozen biscuits and frozen self-rising pizza ( its basically Red Baron Rising Crust pizza) Also, if I am saving .55 to buy something and WalMart has their store brand for even less than the net cost of said item, how am I saving any money?

I would probably clip coupons if Walmarts stuff was crap, but its not. Now, for all of you people who shop smaller grocery chains, YMMV. I know that Kroger's private label stuff is not nearly as good, nor is Publix'.

Now factor in the price of gas and its expected climb to 7.00/gal and one stop shopping may be your only way of saving any money.

Peace

Need? No. But in the grand scheme of things, she's spending an extra hour or two a week doing this and now has the extra money to buy things she WANTS instead of NEEDS.

Everyone has their hobbies and ridicule her all you want, if you found a way to make an extra couple hundred bucks a week with only a few hours work, you'd do it too. Unless, of course, you're one of the 95% of ATOT that makes a $100k per year and is too good to admit that they, like most Americans, have a truckload of debt.

I would pay this lady $20/hr to shop for me. It'd be an easy $100 in her pocket and I'd still come out on top.

They arrived at the checkout counter where Crissy proceeded to split her checkout into 5 transactions. She took the Extra Care Bucks from each transaction and applied it to each following transaction. Apparently, CVS has no problem doing this for Crissy. All said and done, Crissy bought approximately $140 worth of merchandise for under $5. Crazy, huh?
I think I might shoot someone if they did that in front of me. I don't care how organized you are, it's going to take longer than if it were all one transaction. And I don't understand why she does this... does it get you more bucks? I would think you can stockpiles your ECB's and just use them all on the next trip.

hummm if I could spend 2-3 hours a week and save even $60 bucks on my shopping I would, I love so many people on this thread are bitching about "cheap cheap cheap!" but they're the same ones who are on the Hot Deals forum and will jump threw 5 hoops to get a 500 gig HD for 15 bucks cheaper. Maybe I'm "dumb" but I don't like to waste money, Geekbabe got 5 12 packs of Soda & 2 of the family size bags of Dorritos for less than 4 bucks. Those 2 items are a huge part of my diet. I typically pay 5 bucks for 1 12 pack, and $3.50 for the chips, soda $4/chips $3.00 on SALE.

She paid $3.69 after tax and CRV, I MIGHT have gotten 1 12 pack for that price, if it was on sale. I would imagine she didn't spend a day to make that deal possible, and I would be paying around $30 for the same items. If she's being "cheap" than I need to be cheap too, cos that's a hellova deal she got!

she wanted all the items at once maybe? She could do 5 runs threw checkout getting at the back of the line every time to keep people from bitching, but what she did makes sense. I buy my GF Bath & Body Works, they run a lot of specials and I almost always end up saving a lot more by breaking it up into 4 or 5 transactions. The buy 3 get 1 free you always get the cheapest thing free (of course) so I work it out to where if I have 12 items I'm not just getting the $3 items for free but some $9-10 stuff for free too.

Actually I'll get $3 of that money back when we return the empty cans, so my out of pocket cost was only 69 cents:)

yeah but you paid for the CRV up front, I get money back on cans too. Even if you got no CRV back the deal you got is sweet.
