I know what you mean Grin. :(

I had purposely set my queue to upload/download during the supposed low usage times. But I think now, since alot of other people are doing the same, it's not making any difference.

I made a comment on Ars (there are a few threads there discussing bandwidth, etc) about Team queues and whether the big corporate sites, like Compaq, Sun, and SGI are queueing. I know that all the big tech-sites are, but it seems the more we try, and others like the corporates don't, then the corporates in effect "steal" the bandwidth that we've given back.

I recommended that a plea go out to alt.sci.seti and/or SETI's own forum to get the attention of those corporate sites since they may not have formalized forums, etc., to get the word out to their team members. I'm thinking they're more of a loose federation of employees who crunch under that corporate name - but regardless, they DO have ALOT of firepower to be where they are in rank and they ARE making an impact on bandwidth just like the rest of the top 20 teams. Another biggy (just in sheer number of members - although obviously, not all are active) is Team ArtBell and I wonder if they queue. Need to check that out.

Anyway... we'll see. I set my queue to prioritize for uploading so I could at least try to get some results up. Looks I managed to get some uploaded finally, but still alot to go.. :(

<< To "solve" the problem you'll have to PM or email the "Queue-Master" since bezerkely is suck, so they can move some WUs into your acct manually on their Queue >>

Actually you need or should send a user_info.sah so they can create a Q and then move Wu's into that Q. ;)

That works too :D

Are they forgetting to turn the server priority UP at night? Seems to me that I get NO better connection at hight than I do during the day:|

I really hope they can solve this SOON, cuz taday is the day me thinks me will run out of WUs - or atleast by early morning tommorow:|

Sorry Federation Queue users, hopefully I won't run out or Engineer gets back online so you aren't stuck without WUs.

I know I'm not in that bad a position, but it sure is aggrevating to get up at 6:00am (central), decide that "it'll be a good time to upload my Seti" (4 am Pacific), and not be able to upload (or download) much of anything- took me several trys andabout 1 1/2 hr just to do 5.
My "other machine" just says "cannot connect to server- try again in an Hour"
Grrrrrrrr

DDad, check this page and see if you can change to use another public TeAm proxy, and relieve the strain from OK a bit.

I've had it. These ongoing problems with the SETI project's bandwidth are insane and indicate (to me, at least) that the project isn't interested in doing serious science. I will honor my team commitment to the Captains of Crunch in the Shamrock MTR that is scheduled to last until mid-March (provided anyone can still download WUs so as to compete), but at that point I will switch the largest part of my fleet to some other project, probably going back to GIMPS.

One pi$$ed off Cardassian...:|

so true, well said GulDukat

If this keeps up for much longer I will switch too, I have done some RC5 in the past, and I'll go back if i have to.

Hey Gul - you're supposed to ATTACK Berkeley! NOT RETREAT!
This is not the Cardassian that I know unless too much Dominion thinking has gotten into your head!! :p

Oh my... Don't do that, it's not worth it. :( Try SetiQueue

Poof:

Even stubborn and trouble-making Cardassians know better than to fight a losing battle. This is supposed to be fun while at the same time advancing science as well as the art of distributing computing. Having to struggle to download WUs for crunching or to upload results is not fun. Being faced with the imposition of a new client designed to slow down the work being done simply because the project has not allocated enough resources to bandwidth is not fun. The short-sightedness by those directing the project is amazing. I have better things to spend my time on. Besides, my "leaving" SETI will free up a tiny bit of bandwidth for someone else (as if that will help).

BTW, the Empire was always leery of J. Dax...:D

I agree Gul... I don't know how many thousands of words I have typed on the issues, both this year and last regarding SETI and how they're handling their bandwidth. It seems the same arguments and solutions that they gave us last year at this time, yielded nothing other than a fancier web page and now a SETI forum. We all knew that in a year's time, the 3-hour WU that the 3.03 client was supposed to eliminate, would return in short order... and it has.

BUT... I stuck with it through all of that, not only to continue to help with the search, but to also interact with you guys. :D

I have a feeling that something is about to be done with the current situation very very soon (and it might not have anything to do with a longer client - although that will probably be a given later on).

You could run another project alongside SETI like I do. :)

In any case, hope you hang in there!

I couldnt agree more Mr. Dukat. I have given up being extremely enthusiastic like I used to be before my major outage earlier this month. My habits now are to just not worry about SETI and let it run it's course - however this is not ideal - its just the only way I can run SETI without getting wound up to exploding point :(

I do hope that they dont release another client for the sole purpose of extending WU times. They will tell us that it also searches in more detail - thats fair enough, but that doesnt do it for the major teams who are gunning due to stats... :(

In the mean time, I just turn off my PCs :Q when I dont have enough WUs. Not having to worry about making sure there arent any wasted cycles has given me a lot of free time - its surprising.

Migroo - those of us who are veterans will tell you that if it weren't for situations like this, we would have nothing to look back at and laugh about when things are going right. :)

If you hang on a little longer, you could print up your own T-shirt that says "I survived the great SETI outage" or "I survived the great SETI bandwidth nightmare" or some other such thing that people will see you wearing, will point to, laugh at, and shake their heads at when you walk by...lol :D :p

What do we have here, a bunch of fair weather friends? :Q

When the going gets tough, the not so tough run away? :Q

Sheesh, I remember RC5/OGR having some real server/stats outages too. Lost WUs, lost stats. I'm sure every DC project has their tough times, tough situations. A good strong team will weather the storm, and come back stronger than ever. :)

Are we, as a Team, going to let some bandwidth problems break us apart, tear us down? I thought we were made of tougher stuff. Maybe I'm wrong. :(

Yes, it IS VERY frustrating, maddening. :| It has messed up the stats for the MTR, for DSLR, for everything. And yes, it IS VERY frustrating to hear Berkeley's response, or lack thereof. DNET wasn't always to quick to fix things either. :|

But hey, I agree with Poof, we can get past this, and someday be able to laugh about it, or at least shake our heads. :)

Maybe it's time to let off some steam playing some on-line games, UT? CS? Something to help get our frustrations out in a non-team destructive manner. :D

Let's hang tough Team Anandtech! :D

What Dennis (Ray) said! :D

Although I usually try to stay away from games (for SETI), I have recently begun playing Midtown Madness 2. There's nothing like driving through a city, full speed, smashing everything in sight! ;)

What they all said....We will get through this, no doubt. This just seperates the men from the boys....or is that the resident-aliens from the extraterrestrial-aliens....something like that anyways.....

Oh ofcourse - we will get past this and I do not intend to stop running SETI.

Its just that for the moment, while Berkeley is dogged with problems, I cant be bothered to ensure that every machine possible is running 24/7, as there arent the WUs to go around, and I'm cirtainly not going to spend more time than I normally do to try and get WUs which just do not want to be downloaded... :(

There is no point stopping though, I shall definately continue and put some more enthusiasm into the project once that enthusiasm will yeild results...

Well said Ray! I agree, but it is hard to keep one's faith when SETI HQ is not keeping us updated!

I noticed that one of my boxes was down yesterday morning as I was leaving for work. I turned it off then back on a couple of times and it would not come back up (no video, but power came on.) Prior to this time I would have been back at lunch and would have taken the box apart trying to get the system running. And, I would have fretted over the lost production until I got it back up. Well, it is the next afternoon and I have yet to crack the case. I reassigned the WUs within SetiQueue. I find that I take this entirely too serious and have had to lighten up with this recent problem.

So Poof, where do we get these T-shirts? :D

/oops...sorry Poof! It was a typo!

Agreed with Ray! :)

The reason I joined the TeAm was to see what I could do to help them with the DSLR race. Plus, it was fun to help put something together that hadn't been done in an organized fashion (setting up a service distribution across a network). I look at it as a hobby, something fun to do, brag about stats and generally enjoy the fellowship of the TeAm (wasn't that a Tolkien book? ;) ).

If the project has its problems, so be it. Ain't no skin off my nose. I've got other more important things going on in my life - Seti is just a minor part compared to my family, job, etc.

Now I've got to go. Heading down to Bloomington to see the Indiana Hoosiers destroy the evil Ohio State Buckeyes in a battle for the Big 10 regular season title! :D GO HOOSIERS :D:D:D

Guess again, HoosierBoy!!! ;):)

Although I must admit you're not nearly as much fun to hate since Booby Knight got canned. :) (No, that's not a typo...)
