Fellas, help me out here...

Check out what Dell is offering only thru Costco, is this worth it to drop the cash and go for it? How would this machine be in comparison to building out my own gaming machine?

$1,300 and only a 4850 graphics card?

Lousy deal unless you just can't face using a screwdriver and spending a couple of hours to build something better for less.

Dave, Ive been spec' in out parts individually and I havent found pricing to be close to the Dell system above.

Whats wrong with a 4850 is it too low end for this system?

What do you recommend as an alternative?.....please provide some specifics so I can do some more research. I want to built the fastest gaming machine for as close to 1299 or less as possible

thnx!

If you're spending over $800 then you should at least be getting a 4870 1 GB.

Are you sure you need an i7 and 6 GB RAM? A fast Core 2 E8500 3.1 GHz with 4 GB RAM would cost much less, partly because good motherboards are $100 instead of $300.

Dave thanks for your help...
Ive been doing alot of reading lately in the CPU section and there is a firey debate as to the advantages of Quad Core CPUs now over the Dual Cores

SO I'd like to stick with a quad....would you recommend perhaps a 9850 Quad over the new Intel I7 processors?

Im not necessarily looking for fastes stock performance because i overclocke every thing I can when I buy stuff...so Im looking more for potential headroom or capability too when I purchase these chips and motherboards as well.

So I guess im still a little confused as to what cpu will give me the 'most' performance in a real world environment. Not on a vanilla system with all new drivers cleanly installed. Over time, I want to be sure that as I install all the extra crap, system tray garbage, that I have a processor that is going to excel running my games with all those services still drawing cycles

What do you recommend for the 'bang for the dollar?"

CPU
Motherboard
Graphics card.....is the ATI Radeon right now the king of the hill over GeForce?

ATI vs. Nvidia right now is really all about your pricepoint. <$200 is a 4850, 200-250 is a toss-up for 4870 1GB and GTX260, 300-350 is a GTX280, ~400 is GTX285, >400 is 4870x2.

Also, unless your doing some serious multitasking, I'm talking editing videos while photoshopping while rendering while playing counter-strike, you won't need a quad-core.

(Unless of course your cool and do Folding@Home, then you should spend more money for the quad and get the TeAm some more ppd 😀)

Wouldn't spending the money on a few 9800 GTs give more ppd? 😛

I'd go with a Q9550, a good P45 board and a 4870/260 as opposed to what the Dell system is trying to give to you. i7 vs Core2Q for gaming = no real benefits, sure it might be a tad faster clock for clock, and the SLI performance is higher. But it's not the difference between playable and unplayable and SLI is something most people tend to avoid.

Pretty much what they say, having i7 is ok, but unless you are doing h264 video encoding at 1080p or folding, you're not going to see any performance gains out of that Quad core with hyperthreading. Get a 45nm Penryn, buy a cheaper board, some cheap memory, and get a good graphic card if you're predominately going to be gaming.

btw....in comparison to the XBOX 360 internal Hardware (3 GPUs?) How do one of these system builds compare for graphical gaming horsepower and capabilities?

And also, are we just focusing in too much only on what that DELL system offers in terms of just power alone versus what you guys are recommending and taking into consideration also overall 'bang for my buck?" I mean that whole system for 1299 comes with a pretty sweet 23" LCD WS monitor, Windows Vista 64bit, and a complete mouse, keyboard, and speaker system....not to mention the its an entire solution completely assembled and ready to go.

You guys really think I can build a much faster gaming system with that kind of screen as well for the same price?

The PC itself is never really the problem in terms of cost when building yourself, it is always the display the rises the cost, unless you can find a great deal, this is also my current dilemma. I have never bought a store bought computer in my life other than my laptop. Although I regret that these days too as it weighs 8 pounds although that was three years ago when I bought it. I lost my PC in my divorce and haven't until recently had the budget to build a new one. The killer has always been the monitor. But building one yourself is always more cost effective especially since you will never have to pay tax with most online resellers and a lot of them offer free shipping or relatively low shipping on most items. Any of the systems being discussed would absolutely destros an Xbox 360 in terms of horsepower, they're just in an entirely different class of performance.

Look at it this way, if you think its worth it, buy it. But be prepared to be put on hold for 2-3 hours and then talking on the phone to a tech in India for 30 minutes, just trying to get your address down correctly.. That was possibly the most frustrating time I have ever had with customer support. I would steer people away from Dell simply for that fact. Their support is pretty much crap, but if you have no problems with it, it should run ok.

As for the monitor, yes it is a 23" monitor, but it is also a TN panel. Meaning, that for around the same price you can get that same sized TN panel + faster graphics card, while having a slightly older processor (since i7 doesn't help with games that much, if any). AGAIN, it is all up to what you want to do with your system.

folks...now apparently DELL has this same deal for $999 now!!

Its on Slickdeals listed at that price.....so NOW is it a definite deal??

Yup, I don't think anyone can build a rig with all those parts for $1000 including Windows, monitor, etc.
