This speaker too close? pic

Is this speaker too close to my hard drive and/or ram? It's a 3way that handles about 100w rms, so not all that big a magnet, driver is 8". Have my case door off & the speaker facing the camera to better illustrate it. If it's too close I'm gonna end up having to build a stand, so I'd much rather have it on my rig if possible. Pic

Get some of the dust out of that case, but if it works and your PC isn't crashing or doing strange things it's probably fine.

I would move it.

The vibration from the speaker can't be good for the HD.

Definitely - I've got a subwoofer on the floor, nearly 3 feet away from my aperature grille monitor. When the subwoofer outputs a lot of bass, the vertical wires on the monitor vibrate, causing the image to shimmer. I'd figure that, if bass from a small subwoofer can affect a monitor a few feet away, that huge speaker there, right on top of a PC could wreak havoc on anything inside - the hard drive head could bounce and grind to the beat, literally. And I don't know how well a CD would read either, plus, the vibration could just shake connections loose anywhere in the system.

you are an idiot if you really think that is ok. hard drives platters are a few nanometers away from the stylus, and while they are very resiliant to outside interaction, bass will definitely penetrate the assembly and rattle it to hell. you just asking for hard drive failure.

wow...i cant believe someone would do this.

It's normally placed as pictured here. I wasn't aware that asking about something like this makes one an idiot 😛

Why are you mixing gigaworks and those huge ass other speakers?

Magnetics = bad.
Vibration of hard drives = bad.

Placement of speaker = bad.

Move speaker = good!

Not close to the monitor either... wavy, strange colours = bad!

Lil more 'oomph' for the front channels was what I had in mind.. the 3ways aren't actually hooked up at the moment, just something I've been meaning to try out.

I think its in a horrible place, but you're more likely going to damage a CRT than anything else. Hard drives have tight tolerances, but they are also built well can can take a lot of vibration.

The question shouldn't be if its ok to be there, but why haven't you found a better place for it regardless (or smaller speakers).
