Meshuggah is quite an amazing band. I saw them live a couple years ago and they put on a brilliant show.

While I personally love metal drumming, and tight, complex rhythms like Meshuggah, I can see where it wouldn't be for everybody. But this Cobus dude in the OP would probably shit himself if he tried to play, or tried to write something as impressive as something from Meshuggah, or any number of other metal bands. Sorry, I'm just not seeing where I'm supposed to be impressed by this Cobus. Maybe it's the fact that he's covering absolutely shitty music. Boys Like Girls? Are you shitting me?

Uh... what the hell? Seriously, what the hell are you talking about? He's certainly a competent drummer, about as good as should be expected from anyone who is paid to play this type of music. But seriously, what the hell are you talking about? There is nothing particularly exceptional about his playing.

ahhh, the first elitist prick finally enters the thread.

I could understand why you would say that, if this guy was displaying anything that was actually impressive. Like I said, he is certainly a competent drummer and completely adequate for that style of music. But this isn't anything deserving of its own thread. At the height of my playing I would also put myself at about 80% of this guy, because he does seem to be very tight and consistent. Can you give any discernible reason why you
think this drumming is particularly special?

He's a solid drummer, he is enjoyable to watch because he seems to enjoy what he is doing (and the different camera angles/editing is fairly well done, makes it more interesting), and he looks (IMO) to be maybe 17 or 18 y.o., so those are all things he has going for him, but I agree he is not demonstrating any super great proficiency or anything. He's young, though, so maybe give him another three or four years.

you know what, you're right.
after watching him again, i don't see anything special. he's just an average drummer not deserving of a thread. sorry, for creating this thread and wasting your time.

After all, any music posts must meet Triumph's approval. Oh wait, maybe he could have chosen the option of not posting.
Here is some different System of a Down by the same guy:

You guys are right. Conflicting opinions should not be voiced. Everyone should keep their opinions to themselves. In which case there is no point of even having a discussion board. We should all go home now.

His biggest problem is he's picking songs which are heavily focused on snare and cymbal combinations, rather than utilizing the entire set with the at least two tom's that I saw in the video. I've always been a fan of Drumming to Super Mario 2

Ok now THAT was good drumming. Wish I hadn't have overlooked that earlier. We can compare that to the OP's drummer as they are performing in a similar vein - adding their own interpretation of the drum track to an existing song. Irrespective of the song selection, there is MUCH more going on here to be impressed by. Great composition, tight playing, inventive fills, good beat, nice use of staccato rhythms, basically everything this Cobus dude is trying to do.

Thanks for the link, Pegun, you made the thread worthwhile!
