That's not a requirement with every provider. Most people are already paying $20 a month for their phone line. You're not paying an extra $20 on top of $29.95 a month. You pay $20 a month anyway for your phone line with cable - so it *is* cheaper than cable.

And what are you talking about in terms of noise? Data travels on a seperate stream from voice. If you have additional noise, either your filters suck, or your lines suck, or both.

My cable company just got bought out and they upgraded me without even having to ask. I went from $90.33 a month for basic digital cable and a 2000/128 modem package to $82.05 for every channel they have (pay channels too) and a 3000/384 modem. My last speed test at DSLreports was 2986/368. All this for a price that's locked in for 2 years...Schweet...

Thanks for the thoughts guys. We're currently paying $120.00 a month for cable tv and cable modem service. Sure, it includes 3 premium packages but we never watch movies anyways. So we'd be going down to $52 for cable and $29.99 for dsl vs $99.99 for basic cable/cable modem. That's about a $10 savings a month (we already have a verizon phone line so we wouldn't factor that in).

The big factor is AOL. Not for me but my parents - they pay around $12/mounth for AOL. Would the free MSN account that comes with verizon DSL really offer a similar experience for newbies like my parents? $22 a month savings IS substantial to us (especially since my pops is retired).

msn premiere (which is what verizon offers) is pretty good but it's not as complete as aol.

no doubt they suck. We're talking about Verizon DSL here. Check dslreports verizon forum. Lot of complaints about additional noise on the line after dsl was provisioned. I personally believe it's there crappy filters rather then the line cuz the bandwidth is rock solid and I'm pretty close to the CO

i live down in baton rouge louisiana and verison i herd sux. but cox cabble also has so many issues around my area its madness. and everyone has it so its slow as hell in my neiborhood. i have bellsouth DSL and its awesome. i havent had a problem in 2 years. i play alot of counterstrike i the servers i play in all over the US i dont go over 50 ping ever. i say i average 30...um this prolly wont help u at all but i just wanted to say somehting...im bored

in my area, it's either Comcast Cable or Verizon DSL. I've always had DSL and have never had an issue with it. Speeds are good (not as good as my backbone connection here at work, but good ), and I've had no downtime.

my friend has cable (comcast)... speeds run about the same, but he tends to have more downtime (only happened once in the past year, but he had no service for an entire weekend).

plus, Verizon fought the RIAA. even though I don't use any P2P software anymore (due to spyware), I gotta give them a lot of love for that.

i called verizon and threatened to switch to time warner because of the 3mbps over 1.5. get this....

they gave me two months free service to stay. plus they informed me that verizon will soon be upgrading to 3mbps. the only reason they held out was because they were maintaining a competitive customer base at 1.5. coupled with the 30 a mo. (minus 5 a mo. cause i got all the phone stuff, too) you really can't beat it. no restrictions due to the number of users online. as long as you are in the city, dsl is the way to go. cable is so expensive, too. i say dsl all the way.

even after you throw in the required phone service, dsl is cheaper than cable.

I've found that cable is stable across the US. As in, I can just about assume most places with cable internet access will be stable and provide a decent connection, with DSL OTOH, I have to worry about the area I'm in.

depending on where you live... dsl can be great... $ for performance verizon dsl here in pa is faster and more reliable, and cheaper then cable

My company has lots of remote users who connect via VPN.

The ones with DSL (particularly Verizon DSL) have no end of trouble. Their VPN connection gets dropped regularly. I think that Verizon does some kind of round robin pathing that screws with the Cisco VPN client and causes it to say "Screw It" and disconnect.

I never get calls from Cable users. And when I'm at home using VPN it always works flawlessly on my Adelphia cable modem... Wonder why?
