Lots of respondents feel they wouldn't necessarily die. My guess though is that the cord just isn't plugged in.

right , which means it is fake/staged

and in any newer house, any outlets near a pool have a GFCI to protect those kind of morans, but it still isn't a good idea to tempt fate

Everyone believes that if a hair dryer falls in the tub while you're in the water you will die. Thanks to the movies. Even if you touch it you probably will not die. :Q

Now if you hold it in your hands, dripping wet and jump into a tub/pool - well good luck with that one!

Throwing a heater into a hot tub most definitely will not make everyone jump around and die. From what most people really know about this - yes they will scream and jump but it's not the electricity that makes them do it! I know I've been there, done that.

I don't recommend trying any of these things unless you know what you're doing, however.

Mythbusters did a show on this and their conclusion was that you would die if you tossed an appliance into a tub that didnt have GFCI protection. Especially one with heating elements.

They both thought it was a myth, but it turned out to be true.

The surge supressor does have a load reset switch in it most likely.

However, that will only protect the load it's connected to afterwards it will still electrify the water. Since it's a 3 prong outlet though it will definatley trip the breaker. Since the ground will come in contact with the water as well. The ground will become electrified and trip that circuit. Hair dryers and toasters don't have grounds (at least most of them).

But this is stupid

It looks like it may be happening in another country.

Devices without ground fault protection can provide a fatal shock when submerged in water.

I'm not saying there's no risk but an appliance falling into a tub/pool is NOT an instant death sentence to everyone in there like the movies make people believe.

I've done experiments just like the video I linked to and did not feel any shocks. 240VAC too.

Mythbusters? LOL those guys will probably blow up a plane and say it does not take off. Those hacks - heck it's entertainment. Like TV's CSI if it were like a real lab the audience would go to sleep so they have to keep it entertaining.

I'd lay in a tub and have someone toss in a drill - running to prove a point but they don't let us do that. ;)

GFCI's are great but I've heard people complain about how they were shocked when they picked up a tool with a hot chassis - while grounded standing in a puddle! If there was no GFCI they could've very well received a fatal shock. But people think a GFCI will prevent you from a getting a shock too. Only common sense can do that.

BTW, that MUST be in Europe, judging by the size and shape of the plugs, those are known as Shuko plugs... 220V AC, 50 Hz.

I'm reminded of the scene in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas where Thompson tosses the radio into the bathtub while his attorney is in it to make him think he is dying. :D

But what about grounded devices? The stuff they tested was ungrounded.

The surge strip is grounded, or at least it should be. Most effective path to ground, I'd think, would be through the nice copper conductor.

And there's probably a reason they say, "Don't try this at home."

I have a submersible water pump that's gotta be at least 25 years old that leaks electricity. I found it at my old house and was going to use it for my water cooling, and I was testing it in a large plastic bucket that was sitting on a small wooden stool. The pump energized the water, I stuck my hand in to feel the flow rate from the outlet and my arm went numb.

It may not be an instant death sentence, but it certainly won't be pleasant.

That makes it even worse! Like Rubycon says, it's not a death sentence, but it's still not very clever.

+1 for spelling "ludicrous" correctly, though.

Why do you need a friend? Set up a webcam and drop it in yourself.

Try a toaster and a ceramic heater without autoshut off.

Many modern appliances have circuits that kill the power when they sense a short.

GFCI's were invented and used at a higher cost for a reason.

"Why does the guy with the bad tan and beer in hand have a boner?"

OMGROFLHAHA!

"@Gary_slamson way to have the boner be the first thing you notice bud.

Hate you spoil your fun, but these crazy inventions called circuit breakers would protect them. Maybe they're not morons but in fact, smarter than you. "

Oooo, owned! ROFL!
